Is it appropriate for an elementary school to discuss incidents that involve violence with your kids?

Especially without your knowledge?

Hearing stories left and right regarding school counselors talking about the Boston incident with kids at school.

Not high school kids. Younger kids.

I think it's very inappropriate. Thoughts?

Well, mine was told there was an 8-year-old killed, there were amputations and other injuries. Are you shitting me?

^^ yeah it's crazy, no way should they be discussing that. And don't get me started on all these video games, every game is just shooting at people and it seems like every 10 year old boy plays these things, and the parents don't care.

i realized a long time ago that the public school system is primarily a bunch of pro-government propaganda with a little bit of education mixed in

Fuck no, it's not appropriate.

I'd be pissed.

Teachers wouldn't have dared to do that in my kids' school. They're smarter than that.

Well, first things first, I need to find out if what he told me is accurate. I don't just take his word for it. He told me it was an intern counselor not his teacher. I talked to her and she knew nothing about it.

No kid's.

But it seem's like that should be left to the discretion of the parents for any child at the elementary level

My girlfriend is a teacher and she told me that policy is to only talk about it if the kid mentioned it first..

Well, I get that portion but he told me they were taken as a group into a class and it was discussed to all of them. My wife is an elementary school teacher and she was kind of dumbfounded.

Well, yes. That's what I think as well. I would never think it's ok to discuss with a kid between 5-10 if they aren't my kid.

Chop, I think it all depends.

I was told today they held these discussions in several classrooms and in one classroom there was a kid who had a brother who was killed by an IED in Afghanistan. When the kid heard this, he broke down big time thinking about his brother.

It's not their place to have this discussion with our kids.

Come on folks.

When I was in school the space shuttle blew up with the school teacher.
My school freely talked about the school teacher dying.

Why are so many people offended by the truth?

There is never anything wrong with telling the truth.

Quit underestimating 8 year olds.
They are a whole lot smarter then most of you give them credit for.

I remember how smart I was when I was 8.
When you lie to young kids this makes them distrusting of you later on in life when trust is of the utmost importance.
Never lie to child.

Sometimes they are smarter then you.
And they can tell when they are being lied to a lot more often then you think.

Do you have any kids? If so, have they ever asked you about death?

The truth is it's my job as a dad to talk to my kid about a very serious event in our country involving death. I should be the one to relay the message the way I want him to hear it. It should not come from an educator that innocent people lost legs due to a terrorist's bomb.

yes and yes

And yes I left no truth out.

And when she asked me if Santa was real I said no he is not.

I refuse to knowingly tell my child a lie.

You would be ok with an educator telling your child in a classroom setting that 20 kids were murdered in Newtown, CT?

Your kid comes home shaken and tells you they don't feel safe and you would accept someone else telling your child about that incident?

What educational value does talking about the Boston Marathon Bombing bring to my child in a classroom?

Yes I would be ok with it.
I would be more then ok with it.
I would encourage it.

The education value would be the kid gets to learn that life is not always great. There are some bad people out there.

The sooner they learn this the better.

We'll just agree to disagree. An elementary school classroom is not the place to talk about murder. It adds no educational value whatsoever. But don't get me wrong, I'm not angry about it at all. I just want to know what happened.
