Never keep more money in a ppal account than you can afford to lose. It's not a bank, and won't protect your assets like one.

So they couldn't withdraw funds out of your old bank account? First call your bank make sure they can't take $ out.

If all they can get is what is in your ****** I think they have some type of protection don't they? Sorry can't help more, all I could think of off my head as about to sleep.

BTW, call the bank associated with the account if it is a major bank they could have 24/7 customer service and just make sure he can't take $ out of your bank account.

I had like $400 in there....nothing life changing but I don't give out $400

it is a relief if that is all they have access to and not my bank account...but I'm not even 100% sure of that.

Thats not too bad, I'm not sure what protection they have. They might reimburse the $400 I dunno.

BTW Good job not cursing out ivy for his response. After getting hacked I would've.

Don't have $ you can't afford to lose in there. WTF does that even mean? Why not just say don't keep any $ in there cause its not FDIC insured? What someone "can afford to lose" and what they want taken from them are two pretty different #s.

Do you think you somehow gave one of the 64 people in the contest some kind of info on your account that you should not have?

This happened to me about 4 yrs ago. Someone hacked my PP account (which was linked to a bank account). The hacker authorized a purchase of a $900 cyber game "gem". It wasn't a tangible good or service. A friggin' "gem". I called PP on a Sunday evening in a panic and was able to document with them that it was an unauthorized / hacked account purchase. The transaction was pending and had not been debited from my account yet. I made sure the PP rep understood it was a fraudulent transaction and to make sure they do not debit my account. I wake up on Monday and call my bank to advise them also. On Tuesday AM though....PP debits me for the $900. I called PP immed. to demand to know why they let it go thru after i documented it as fraudulent. Amazingly they told me that the protocol was to let the transaction go thru and then open a formal dispute after the debit !!! I was beyond pissed. Especially after the PP guy on Sunday night told me that all was fine since I called it in. Soooo then I open a formal dispute which takes a few days. It just got worse. PP rules in favor of the hacker !!! I was now beyond rage and took a day off from work to deal with those fcks. They claimed that the transaction was traced back to my IP and therefore it could not have been fraudulent. Without going into detail... that was of course impossible and I told them as much. About 10 days later they flipped the ruling to my favor and refunded my money. The only trace I had on the hacker was the email he was using to make the purchase. I traced it to Mexico... but that was the end of it. To this day I have no idea how some fck got into my PP and then made it look like I made a purchase from my IP.

Lesson learned there is... do NOT link PP to a bank account. Holy shit... it was like the twilight zone. I was at their mercy and they were saying one thing and doing another. Fck PP ~!!

This is a great point.
Shdw if you are still up did you make the mistake of clicking the PP link in the email?
If you did what they did was use key stroke logging when you tried to log in with your correct account info.
This is there way of finding out your login info by recording your keystrokes after clicking the link in the email which is really a fake pp site.

If you have not already done so try logging into pp outside of the link in the email with a web browser.

If you are able to log in with your correct info you need to change your username and password pronto.

This is a very well know scam called phishing.

sorry to hear it, i hope they catch the scumbag who did this to you and put him away. i just removed the bank account that i had linked to my PP account. i've never used it to pay for transactions anyway (only use my linked credit card), so there's no point in having a linked bank account on there in this case. SoCal thanks for the advice.

Dont worry shdw pay pals customer service is pretty good. Had something similar happen to me twice with pay pal. Been using them since 2002, problem first year - involved about $300 in fraud damage but they fixed in about 3 days. 2nd problem happened last year and was just under $500, the resolved immediately. They were able to see the transaction and see that things were fishy. Did not have to explain much just answer a few simple questions.... Hope things get fixed for you

my aunt had her identity stolen last year and it was an exhausting, terrible situation. Took like 6 months to get things back to semi-normal.

Cops couldn't give it much attention cause they have tons of these to deal with. I hope you all have credit monitoring, its a must in this day and age.
