Dr. Sidney Freedman the liberal Army Psychiatrist had to deal and counsel with such individuals as the cross dressing Corporal Klinger, the gung ho Colonel Flagg and the paranoid Major Frank Burns. Dr. Freedman's analysis sometimes included such themes as the futility and fruitlessness of war, deep reflections of self to reveal the the innner soul and a somewhat indifference and intolerance to authority figures. These themes were also paralled in the original MASH Motion Picture and in the MASH TV Series throughout the years. As much of the show was dedicated to the actual physical scenes of war such as the operating and recovery rooms, Freedman's character allowed the show to also focus on the mental and psychological aspects of war such as bitterness, unforgiveness and depression. Often complex and misunderstood by outsiders, Freedman was always loyal and genuine to Hawkeye, Trapper John and Colonel Henry Blake and would occasionally make the rounds to the Swamp for the weekly poker game.
