</aside> An executive with Las Vegas’ second-largest cab company on Friday angrily responded to a recent state legislative audit that argued nearly 1.5 million travelers were overcharged an estimated $14.8 million last year by cabdrivers and cab companies.
Bill Shranko, chief operating officer of Yellow Checker Star Transportation, said the company is demanding a retraction by the Audit Division of the Legislative Counsel Bureau “for causing irreparable harm to the national reputation of the City of Las Vegas, over 9,000 hard-working taxi cab drivers and the entire taxicab industry in Las Vegas.”
The audit released this month estimated 22.5 percent of the 6.6 million rides by local taxis to and from McCarran International Airport in 2012 were deceptively long. The “long hauling” practices added an average of about $10 to the typical cab fare and recommended the Taxicab Authority take measures to address the long hauling problems.
The auditors reviewed 2,730 airport trips and said 614 involved long hauling.
Shranko blasted the audit in a statement this week.
“The unfounded charges provided to the national media resulted in the Legislative Auditors acting
as judge, jury and executioner by making unproven allegations without following a fundamental,
verifiable investigative auditing process,” Shranko said.
“The primary failure of the audit was that it assumed any taxi fare $5 over an average was presumptive long hauling. Nothing could be further from the truth in Las Vegas where taxi fares from the same embarkation point to the same destination vary dramatically day to day and hour to hour due to traffic, road construction and the direction of the passenger amongst numerous other variables,” he said.
Shranko said the audit was flawed because no customers, taxicab drivers or taxi companies were interviewed for the report. He noted the audit’s conclusions did not include a long-hauling complaint from a customer.
“The Audit committee shockingly failed to take into account the differences in current traffic
conditions affecting a passenger’s choice as to whether the freeway route or city street route is
chosen to or from the airport,” he said.
Yellow Checker Star Transportation is also seeking all legal remedies, Shranko said.
As the second-largest cab company in Las Vegas, Yellow Checker Star holds one-fourth of the operating permits for local taxis. About 1,300 of the company’s 1,700 drivers belong to the Industrial Technical & Professional Employees Union Local 4873, which is part of the other union.
The auditors argued their estimate was conservative. They said they did not count a trip as a long hauling ride unless the fare was at least $5 higher than the estimated fare to a specific destination.
They suggested placing signs at the airport and in cabs that would show the estimated fare to popular tourist resorts.

I would prefer him to say "we disagree with the numbers in the report, but are implementing procedures to make sure not a single customer will be overcharged. We will work hard to earn the trust of tourists and business travelers"

How the hell does a Legislative Auditor in Nevada even have time to look at a Cab Company???

Just the dealings of the corrupt legislature is a full time job then you have that lying, cheating, bribe taking, Communist Know it Nothing Harry Fuck Brain Reid....Audit that sorry bastard if you want to find some gouging going on....But No....Lets use the legislative auditor to attack private businesses.
The whole fucking audit is probably over Reid getting charged extra to pick up a child hooker on the way in from the airport....

Cab drivers in Vegas are shady motherfuckers for the most part. Heard 100's of stories about these long-hauling bastards.

They've tried to long haul me twice...once from the airport and once from Bellagio to downtown. Both times i threw on the backseat what the fare should have been and walked away.... on the downtown trip the guy tried yelling and following me into GN ...I told the valet the story and he told the dude to fuck off or they would call the police.

Fucks them up when you have the cab authority on your speed dial.

I use to live in Las Vegas. When I comeback to visit I almost always rent a car. If your smart and keep your eye on car rental prices you can almost always rent a compact for about $75-85 for 4 days. A cab to the Strip from the airport is about $15 including a tip. How can you pass up renting when essentially it is only costing you about $50 when taking a cab costs you $30 RT. When I lived in Vegas I would park my car at one of the Strip hotels and take a cab to the airport. Parking at airport is a waste of money when you are going out of town for a week or more. The cab drivers would try to fleece to me thinking I was a dumb tourist. I would get in the cab upon my return and say no tunnel, Trop to Strip and they would go silent.

I was just in Vegas this past weekend and rented a car like I always do. The rates are cheap, and I don't drink enough to get smashed...so it's very easy to just drive yourself wherever and whenever you want to go somewhere without having to wait in line for a cab. Hell, one single cab ride probably costs the same as one day of car rental. And with free parking at every hotel, it's a no-brainer IMO.

Or if I'm only staying for a day, I might take the $7 shuttle from the airport and then take the monorail up and down the strip if I need to go somewhere.

I've read how Vegas cabbies will try to take you to the airport quickly (so they can get to their next fare faster) but then they'll take the scenic route if they're taking you from the airport to your hotel since most customers don't know any better. I despise taking cabs in that city, and not just for that reason.

These charges might be difficult to prove, but I wonder if someone will start a class-action suit against the company.
