Any shred of hope that the New York Jets would hold onto backup quarterback Tim Tebow was lost on Friday night, when the franchise used their first second-round pick—the 39th selection overall—to draft former West Virginia signal-caller Geno Smith.

Know Your Pick: Geno Smith
According to ESPN's James Walker, Tebow has been on the trading block for months now but the Jets have been unable to find a suitor.
Plus, with so much money invested in Mark Sanchez ($12.85 million in 2013) and the Jets having brought in veteran passer David Garrard to add to their quarterback mix this offseason, time and space is running out for Tebow in the Big Apple.
For a player who attempted just eight passes in 2012, the move to bring in another young quarterback prospect has to be discouraging. At this point, does Tebow even want to be a Jet?

As for the Jets, unlike Tebow, Smith's throwing mechanics, arm strength and accuracy have rarely been called into question. This makes him an immediate upgrade over the former Heisman Trophy winner on New York's depth chart.
Not to mention Tebow's 47.9 career completion percentage is a serious knock against him heading into the summer.
But more important than Smith's ability are where and when he was selected. Second-round draft picks are not easy to come by, and teams rarely waste them on backup players.
If the Jets saw enough from Smith to draft him seven picks into the second round, then clearly they believe he can be their starting quarterback someday. Bad news for Mark Sanchez and even worse news for Tim Tebow.
Recently, USA Today's Chris Strauss made a convincing argument as to why Tebow won't even be on an NFL roster this coming fall. He discusses the "timing," the "circus" and the need to play him in a "hybrid role" as the biggest reasons why teams are and will be unwilling to acquire him.
But even those reasons are all irrelevant now in terms of his current situation with the Jets. Drafting Geno Smith is a sign that the Jets are ready to begin a new era under center.
The Tim Tebow experiment was a flop, and after a dismal 2012 season on the offensive side of the ball, it's not difficult to imagine Sanchez following Tebow out of New York at some point soon.

[h=1]Sources: Jets may cut Mark Sanchez[/h]
With the second-round selection of Geno Smith, the New York Jets now have a surplus of quarterbacks, leading some sources familiar with the situation to say the team will consider releasing quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Sanchez counts $12.85 million against the salary cap. If the Jets cut him as a June 1 designation, which they can do at any time, the Jets would take a $12.35 million cap hit this year and $4.8 million next year.
There is no offset clause in the contract, meaning they're on the hook for $8.25 million whether he plays for them or not.
Nick Sanchez Jr., Mark's brother and agent, said the Jets have not yet asked the former first-round pick to take a pay cut or proposed a possible trade in the wake of Smith's addition.

In a text to ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, Nick Sanchez said the Jets brass was in contact with Mark Sanchez throughout Friday, telling him in advance about the possibility of drafting Smith.

Asked if Mark Sanchez wants to stay with the Jets, Nick Sanchez said: "I haven't asked him that question yet. He will comment at a later time. "

Clearly there is not enough room for all quarterbacks.

Newly signed free-agent quarterback David Garrard has impressed the organization with his play and personality, and he is considered an ideal mentor for a young quarterback like Smith.

There also has been a slight change in the thought process surrounding Tim Tebow, who showed up to his team's training facility 15 pounds lighter. Tebow has won some support within the organization, sources familiar with the situation said.

Tebow appears lighter, faster and has worked to improve his throwing motion, which the Jets have noticed. The longer he is in the building, the more he wins support, one source said.

This could leave Sanchez as the odd man out. It's not the first time the Jets have considered this move, sources said.

I remember the days when teams wouldn't even think of drafting a black QB.

Really, puts a lotta pressure on all those qb's; they pretty much ahve to stay with Sanchez; try to work Geno in as they can; and Tebow should go with a team that needs to "shake it up"; and he can win some games for a medicre team..jmho gl

Sweet mother of Zeus. How delusional are the 30% who said Tebow would be the starter? LMAO.

Whoever said on one of the half dozen Tebow threads on this forum that he would be out of the league in 3 years is looking like a seer right about now.

Not a Tebow fan by any means but there is no doubt in my mind the Jets would have won more games last season with Tebow starting.

Possibly you mean the Mark Sanchez era is over. Tebow wouldn't have been back with the team no matter who the Jets drafted.

I think this guy could put a little life into the Jets offense. He seems to have that cocky attitude like Joe Willie!

what is his record as a starter?

Uh-huh. It's not like the Broncos got on a little winning streak in *spite* of his quarterback play or anything. And that team ditched him with a quickness just as soon as they could. Getting Peyton Manning was just a great bonus; the Broncos would have gone with anyone at all over Tebow.
