NBA center Jason Collins has become the first male athlete in a major professional sport to come out as gay.
The 34-year-old, who appeared in 32 games this season for the Celtics before being traded at the deadline along with Leandro Barbosa for guard Jordan Crawford and is now a free agent, tells Sports Illustrated:

"I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, 'I'm different.' If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand."
Collins continues, "When I was younger I dated women. I even got engaged. I thought I had to live a certain way. I thought I needed to marry a woman and raise kids with her. I kept telling myself the sky was red, but I always knew it was blue."
As to why he opted to address his sexuality now, Collins says that he was partly inspired by the Boston Marathon bombings, adding that "it takes an enormous amount of energy to guard such a big secret."

"I've endured years of misery and gone to enormous lengths to live a lie. I was certain that my world would fall apart if anyone knew," he writes. "And yet when I acknowledged my sexuality I felt whole for the first time. I still had the same sense of humor, I still had the same mannerisms and my friends still had my back."

You can read Collins' full Sports Illustrated editorial here.

The issue of gay players in professional sports has been a matter of heated debate in recent months, after San Francisco 49ers player Chris Culliver told Artie Lange that he would not welcome gay players in the NFL or on his team. "I don't do the gay guys, man," Culliver is quoted as saying. "I don't do that. No, we don't got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do."
Furthermore, rampant media speculation over Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o's sexuality has prompted other professional athletes, including former Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, to chime in.

In a March interview, Fujita said he "would argue that the overwhelming majority [of NFL players] would be fine with having a teammate who was gay," and that "it would not be an issue" to have an openly gay player in the locker room.

Meanwhile, Nike poached newly out women's college basketball star Brittney Griner for an endorsement deal, but the athletic wear giant apparently has even bigger plans in the works for the first openly gay male athlete.

I have the exact same problem.
Are you using Internet Explorer?

If you click on compatibility view it fixes it. However them other things on the site are out of place.
Now that I know it's not just me I'll make the techs aware of the issue...

I agree with Scott Fujita. I believe the majority of players/teammates would have no problem whatsoever if a teammate pronounced that he was gay.

Maybe Magic Johnson will finally come out, (one of the worst kept secrets in the NBA) but people are blinded by his charm,,,

Thsi is honestly going to create a pretty cool and interesting platform,,, I,, as Most,, hope for this to become a huge positive movement for those that are gay,

I did the hair of several wives and groupies in the NBA. So I was privy to some cool info... but I got nothing on nascar

I'm surprised this thread is not 5 pages by now.

Does this make Collins the new Jackie Robinson? Does Collins get a spot in the NBA hof? A journeyman player that everyone but the most hardcore NBA fans would soon forget the moment he leaves the NBA will now all of a sudden be remembered forever.

Dave Flemming ‏<s>@</s>FlemmingDave <small class="time"> 1h </small> I’ve known Jason Collins for a long time. Brave move - and terrific that this has seemingly given him so much comfort and peace

I guess the next question is; how many of these gay guys who are going to come out now are any good? (In their sports, that is)

Most of the good players are bearded up with wife and kids so probably never unless caught red handed. I wonder if being Gay benefited Collins as he was never any good but still managed to play on six teams. Perhaps there exists a circle of higher up gays in the nba(owners, gms, coaches).

If there are higher ups like that it certainly was not in Utah. If he would have come out when he was playing at Utah he would have been hung

Collins is a big guy, who works hard, and doesn't cause problems. There's surely a place for him in the NBA, even with his very limited skills.

His ex teammates now know why he walked around with a hard on when he was in shower with them.

I wouldn't know if he's big, I've never seen his manhood.

former coach disagrees with you: "He’s a pro’s pro. He is the consummate professional and he is one of my favorite “team” players I have ever coached."

but, you're on an internet forum, so you probably know better.
