I am strongly considering doing this...have done a little research but not a whole lot. If you have/had one, what kind of process did you have to go through for interviews? I assume if they were from overseas they would need a work visa/screening, but what happens if you bring them over and it doesn't work out? Seems the going rate is $200-$400 a week based on experience plus room and board - is this accurate? I would love to have someone fluent in Spanish so that my son can learn another language early...kind of feel like this will be a critical skill for having worthwhile employment in 20-30 years.

i can tell you from personal experience that one of my wife's friends (very cute compared to mrs milwaukee) was living with us for a few months. neither of us is the jealous type, but it got pretty awkward, and i felt guilty even looking at the friend.

are you married?

i would hope there's a 2-week trial period in bringing someone from overseas, anyone can look terrific on paper until you live with them for a while.

Yes, I am married. I have thought about it being awkward, but I guess that is part of it. I am practically never home and my wife has really taken off in a business that requires traveling. We are not Interested in daycare and the home we are purchasing next month has a fully equipped basement apartment with separate entrances - in short, the perfect set-up. I would love hosting someone from another country - I may be wrong but it seems like they would take more pride in there job..its the inconvenient truth that most of us in America are lazy as fuck.

We had one of my brides friends daughter stay with us for a summer a few years ago. It wasnt great, it wasnt awful, but I did get the feeling that "my space" was invaded slightly, although that can just be me.

Alot of my friends here in CR have them as they are very cheap. I have a maid 3 days a week. I couldn't handle the invasion of privacy with a live in 24/7.

Even if they had totally separate quarters? I would imagine it is cheaper to hire a live-in that get maid service 3 days a week. I currently have someone come two days a week, but it's just for cleaning. I really need someone to help with the baby in the evenings and light duty cleaning/cooking during the day.

A live in Nanny in Costa Rica runs about $269,000 and month or $400 USD. That includes everything. Accommodations, meals etc. They will work Monday thru Friday full time and half a day on Saturday.

$180,000 colones or $268 USD a month is the minimum wage for domesticated workers

Hope that helps you in some way puff_>>

we had two au pair, neither lasted two weeks. there was a web site that i used to locate one, they charge a fee.
ended up hiring a nanny, much more expensive. some friends had au pairs that worked out great, its luck of the draw basically.

also, if you haven't done it already, i would really take some time and pencil out the income/expenses of you or your wife working.

i do this for clients and they are often shocked to find out how little it nets them by working.

for example, if your wife is self-employed and making $100,000 (after travel expenses, etc), self-employment taxes are $15,300 (social security/medicare), federal income taxes are probably at least $28,000 when added on to your income, state taxes in alabama are another $6,000.

so the $100,000 has $49,300 in taxes associated with it and another $20k or so for the nanny/daycare.

so someone busting their butt for $100k is nettting about $30k over what they would get if they took care of their own child. not saying that's what your wife makes, but it kind of irritates me when i see a lady pull up to the house across the street in a cadillac to drop off her kids every morning...

It would work for us...I have been looking at the numbers for a while. She isn't self-employeed per say so her taxes won't be bad. If I could put someone on payroll to come in from 6-10 pm every night and work 7-3:30 or so on the weekends I would but no one wants that shift. By the time I pay that salary I could have a move-in and not have to worry with it at all plus I wouldn't have to mess with having someone else on my books.

What i dont get is why do people have kids and have other raise them?

No way i would let anyone but myself or wife raise my child with all the fucking wackos around these days

I got the dog in the divorce, my wife wanted the dog, but none of the responsibilty that goes with it

We just had our second child and my wife has decided in the last few weeks that she is going to stay home and not work. She is a physical therapist and brings in as much, if not more of our income.

She has completed a budget where she believes we will be able to "make it work" on my income alone but I am honestly worried that this is not going to end up well.

Good to know who wears the pants....great choice though, IMO.
