I only had my one guy for 14 years and never had another, however, I don't see any reason to feel guilty about adopting or purchasing a new dog. Seen it done more often then not. Most pet owners continue to have more then one in their lifetime.

that's what my parents have always done. they seem to get over it. but this dog was the best we've had and truly MY first dog. crushing blow. i think i'll be looking into adopting another...it is a good feeling to provide an animal a new life.

Get a rescue dog ..........its a good thing .

Top tier advice. My last two dogs were both rescued from the animal shelter and they are both fantastic. Don't buy a dog from a pet store!!! All they care about is making a profit and they treat the animals like shit.

easy part is get a rescue the reasoning is obvious, hard part is when...if ever. If you are thinking about it you should. I'm guessing the pet you lost loved the life you lived with him and would want you to do that for someone else. Nice thread.

i think rescuing is the best way to do it. i'll never own another animal that isn't rescued, unless there other circumstances.

he sure did love it, great dog. i am thinking about it....i tend to act on impulse and hoping it isn't irrational if i decide to go that way. my only concern is that i'm at school much of the day and my girlfriend is at work. though, i live close and i get a few breaks throughout the day. i guess most people that get a dog have the same issue.

agree with the folks above - no reason to feel guilty. You're not replacing your lost pet - you're giving another animal a chance for a great life, that it may not have otherwise.

[h=1]Rainbow Bridge Poem[/h]Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our pets are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; Her eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your dog, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Maybe you need grief counseling.

[h=3]Getting another pet[/h] Rushing into this decision isn't fair to you or your new pet. Each animal has his own unique personality and a new animal cannot replace the one you lost. You'll know when the time is right to adopt a new pet after giving yourself time to grieve, carefully considering the responsibilities of pet ownership, and paying close attention to your feelings.
When you're ready, remember that your local animal shelter is a great place to find your next special friend.
