What is harder to do? Build a program from the bottom up or maintain a program after a legend has moved on? I'll give you examples from the same conference. Alabama post Nick Saban, let's say he retires in the next 3 years and gets 1 more title. The other side is Kentucky now. Nothing special before you, nowhere to go but up.

I think it really depends.....building UCLA or Kentucky up is a hell of a lot easier than building up Hawaii.

but to answer your question, maintaining IMO is easier.

using your example, if saban left right now (another championship in 3 years is essentially the same as leaving now), I think Alabama will be in much better shape than Kentucky the next 5 years.

That's true, Alabama could disappear for ten years and they'd still be a better program, but what are the expectations? They don't expect much at Kentucky. At Alabama, they'll yank the next guy that doesn't produce a title in a few years. The guy at Kentucky will get more time, and if he makes some kind of progress, he'll buy himself more time.

Harder to maintain IMO. The problem is the timeframe you have to work your style of program. Everyone has a different style, so unless your style auto fits Alabama (probably no other coach in NCAA), you're probably not gonna have the same success for a few years. If your style doesn't fit Kentucky right away, you get much more time to sell your culture while grinding out 5 win seasons.
