I pay Comcast/Xfinity around $45 per month for home internet.

Also pay AT&T $25 per month for 3G for my IPad.

Any better deals out there?

I realize a lot of the cost for Internet deals with the speed you purchase. However, my current home internet says I have "up to 50 mbps" so who knows what speed it actually is.

What is the lowest speed you would want if still wanting to watch videos and download programs, etc?

go to http://speedtest.net and you won't wonder what speeds you have again :)

I think you are getting a good deal man.. doubtful anything cheaper out there and also if not already bundle your cable (and home phone if you have) with your net for a discount.

Thanks Murph.

in just the little bit I've looked around, I think you're right. It's a pretty good deal assuming the speed is close to what's being advertised. I'll check when I get home this evening.

The few deals ive seen advertised for lower seem to be just an introductory rate. That combined with possible installation fees, waiting for the guy to come set it up, etc, ill probably just stand pat.

Might call my provider and tell them about the $19 deals I get in the mail and hope they lower it a hair.

assuming you are married or have a live in partner... and the bill is under your name....you could always try the cancel route and see if they offer up free stuff and if they dont.. cancel and then open up with $19 deals under your wife's name :):)

I just thought of that but it surely would work puff_>>

Ha. Probably would work. Only problem is that if they call my bluff and cancel, I don't actually want the $19 deal. The advertised speed on it is like 768k.

I did that speed test with the link Murph put up but I don't really know what the #'s mean. I have Comcast & this is the results I got from the speed test. Ping--26ms, Download 32.11mbps, & upload speed 5.58 mbps. Is this good or bad? My computer runs pretty good & seems pretty fast but I was just wondering how my #'s compare to most. Thanks for any help.

I pay comcast 56 a month, so I'd say you are getting a good deal.

If you have other services with Comcast, call them and tell them you need to cut some of your services. I'm sure they'd reduce your cost, I've done that before as has a few friends. I like Murph's idea of cancel and put it in wife's name, too. Even if you have no other services with Comcast I'd call and threaten to pull the plug to see if they lower the price.

I don't have too many options. I can't use ATT because I don't have a working phone jack, kind of only leaves Comcast for me. It's $25 month for 6 months then goes up to like $40, for the next 6 months, then like $55.

BUY YOUR OWN MODEM, don't rent it. they charged me $7 a month for a modem I can buy new for $49....I bought the same one they supplied for $8 used on Amazon, works fine. The good thing is they gave me the cables and splitter needed when I rented it and didn't care that I failed to return this stuff when I brought the equipment back ( but I had it ready if they axed for it....saved like $20+ there. That was worth it to rent it for a couple of weeks.

I tested at 5.83 down and .55 up

No idea if that is good or bad, but it fills my needs

They have a monopoly in many areas and know it, a lot of people can't have a dish for various reasons like tree cover or condo rules.

I get somewhere between 20-30MBs download and 3ish upload... I think for most people anything above 3Mbs for download would be fine. Personally, I have two other people in the house, and we all stream and download our television/movies, so the extra bandwidth is necessary.

Can't wait until Google Fiber is available here.

I have a linksys one that is a few years old, pulled it out of mothballs and use it with my $8 used modem, does what I need with the $25 month ( for now) comcast service.

Not if it's a good one, I don't think. If it's wireless, it could reduce your speed though, even if it's theoretically a fast enough technology.

Aren't all routers wireless ? If not what does it do ?

For the modem Comcast rented me.... at $7 / month

[h=1]RCA DCM425 Digital Cable Modem[/h]

It's $49 brand new on Amazon

I bought a refurbished one for $8 , $13.49 with shipping. Two months use covers the purchase over rental thing.

Now I'm going to have to look into if I can buy a cable box instead of renting it....if in fact I'm paying a rental fee or can avoid it.

I liked the good old days when it was easier to steal cable !
