just watching the thunder-grizz game and finally thought to post about this after seeing this happen for so many years now. it annoys me seeing this and i don't understand WHY this happens so much over the course of each game.

so about 10 minutes ago... OKC made a basket and then ZBo on Memphis grabbed the ball to inbound it and was standing completely in the baseline to inbound it like normal.

then for no reason ZBo passed it to the ref who then immediately passed it back to him.

why do players do this? why didn't ZBo just inbound it and get on with it? the ref does not have to handle the ball after each made basket. why would the inbounding team pass it to the ref first before their own player?

don't watch BB but my guess is the 5 second count to inbound the ball

the player he wanted to pass to wasn't ready and this would give them a couple more seconds

i understand why someone would logically think that, but he wasn't being pressured at all by the defense. they made the basket and retreated. there was literally no one else in the backcourt besides him, the PG, and the ref who was also standing in the baseline.

also, keep in mind that once a ref actually starts with his 5 second count (indicated by his arm motions), passing the ball to the ref at that point will not stop and re-start that 5 second clock. so it can't really be for that reason either.

I think its just habit. I didn't see the play at hand, but that would be my best guess

bogut did it today once during the spurs-warriors game. i don't know why, but i find this a totally pointless and annoying thing to do. you're just stalling your own offense.

Sometimes they throw it back if they're mad about a previous call
