Brad Deering, 42, shown in a Facebook photo, was killed Thursday in an apparent home invasion in the southwestern suburb of Escazú.

Brad Deering, a 42-year-old Canadian man who resided in Costa Rica, was killed Thursday by three unidentified gunmen who police believe were attempting to burglarize a home in an upscale neighborhood of Escazú, southwest of the capital.
According to Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ), three men arrived at the home around noon, entered the property and tied up a security guard. Deering, originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, and three other individuals inside the home were also attacked and tied up, an OIJ spokesman said.
Police said Deering was shot three times while trying to escape. The suspects fled the scene after the shooting. The OIJ spokesmen said no further information is immediately available, and the case is under investigation.

When I heard yesterday, I wasn't surprised. Running with the wrong crowd was an understatement. Not to say he deserved to die, but he went into every deal knowing beforehand the other person would be a victim. Sooner or later you'll meet someone who's not willing to let it go.

Last year, he was attacked in his house in Santa Ana. That time, he only got a beating. I'm guessing this time, whatever he took was worth more than a beating...

Don't mean to trash the dead. He was a pleasant enough guy. May he find peace.

Looks like (according to AM Costa Rica) that this guy was 'chased' by one of the gunmen into a neighbors garden and shot execution style 3 times in the head. Doesn't sound like your normal 'robbery'. Others in the home were unharmed. Normally Havana Mike is a good judge of character (as crazy as that sounds). I'll take his side of the story over the initial media reports of a 'robbery'.

Great Facebook pic also of a brand new Lotus and even his lawyer chimes into the thread saying 'Don't post your license plate number'. He then replies with a 'LOL'.

Is there a 'right crowd' of gringos in Escazu to hang around with?

For many of us who knew Brad, we all pretty much knew he made a living on the shady side of the street. He was a nice enough guy, but you would never invest or get involved with anything he was doing. From online pharmacies that never shipped medicine, to gold futures scams, he had no shortage of ex-partners/investors turned enemies.
This was not the first brush with ‘investors’ he had. On several other occasions, his home became the scene of violence when former associates came to settle accounts.
Not helping matters, Brad’s facebook page was home to countless photos of extravagant living and exotic vacations taken with his victim’s money.
So who killed him? We may never know. But one thing is for certain, this was not a burglary. It was someone who knew he would be sleeping in after a long night of partying. The assassins took care not to seriously harm the other occupants of the house.
Unfortunately, Brad leaves behind a child with a local woman. But it seems all his other accounts are now settled. Rest in Peace.

I've never heard of the guy, but from what I know from reading the news, Viejo's account seems likely. Shame to see anybody die, especially in this fashion, but it also appears this was avoidable if the victim excercised some better judgement.
