I would suggest taking the last USA exit and going past the first light to the duty free parking lot. I think it's something like $8. Walk across the border and take a taxi to where you're going.
A taxi will cost $5 to the red light district or the same amount to Revolucion Ave. where the party bars are.
Take a taxi back and notice how hundreds of people waiting in a long line in their cars and another couple hundred waiting in the walk-through line. Thousands of people go to TJ every day and come back to the US.
Just don't act like a jackass or a big bad Norte Americano hot shot and no one will give you any problems.

About 10 years ago I had a boss come in from out of town. He wanted to go to a strip club. I live in San Diego... I took him to a local place. He looked around and said... nahhh.. let's do TJ. Ok - and off we went. Got to TJ and walked accross. Grabbed the first taxi we saw and asked for a good strip club. and soo .....
This guy took us a little past avenue de revolution (the main tourist street). He stops on a street that had no americans and pointed to a bar called "Adelitas". As we got out of the taxi, some homeless dude crawled out of a dumpster. It was a little unnerving but wtf.. it was a bar and people were inside.
We go inside and it is friggin' JAMMED with girls that looked 18-24. Off to the left is a stage with a pole.. BINGO. off to the right is the bar. Again, the place is just wall to wall women. We are like. WOW. wtf is this? We go to the bar and order a few beers. within literally 60 seconds of getting our beers some young hotty grabs my ass as shye is walking by me. I turned around and before I could even say anything she is too far away in a pack of other girls walking towards the other side of the bar. I looked at my friend - told him.. he said the same just happened to him. We friggin smiled as big as we could smile... laughed and said... what the F ?!?!!? I turn to the bartender and ask him when the next dancer takes the stage.... he says 20 minutes or some shit.. It took us another 5 minutes to realize we were in a brothel.. I'll tell you man... there were girls of every category. tall, short, athletic, curvy, cute, innocent, and obvious veterans of the trade.
well... my buddy ended up bangin one of them and to this day this day he refers to that place as "mecca". I was committed and didn't trust them to be safe, so I skipped that bangin'... but I will never forget that place - "Adelitas"
I don't recommend TJ at all with the cartels all tweaked out... but if you can't help yourself and must go.. perhaps check out adelitas.. if only for a beer !
