MIAMI — The Birdman has been banished.

The NBA on Friday suspended Miami Heat backup center Chris Andersen for Saturday’s Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals at Indiana following a Game 5 incident with Pacers forward Tyler Hansbrough.

In the second quarter of the Heat’s 90-79 win Thursday, Andersen hit Hansbrough hard with his shoulder and then gave him a rough shove. He was whistled for a flagrant foul 1. The NBA upgraded that Friday to a flagrant 2, which would have meant an ejection. And a technical that had been called on Hansbrough was rescinded.

It became apparent Andersen would be suspended when NBA Commissioner David Stern severely criticized his actions earlier Friday on NBC Radio.

“I do think he should have been ejected,’’ Stern said. “I looked at the replays and, it seems to me, there was no immediate push or shove of him, he just hauled off and knocked down Tyler Hansbrough. I don’t know what he was doing. And then he pushed him. And then he did not go gracefully to the bench.”

Andersen has been a key reserve for the Heat. He’s made 18 consecutive field goals in the postseason and has shot 21 of 22 in seven regular-season and playoff games against Indiana.

The Heat lead the series 3-2 but have had plenty of problems with Indiana's big frontline. Without Andersen, the Heat figure to turn to deep reserve center Joel Anthony for increased minutes.

Andersen was not available for comment either after Thursday’s game or following practice Friday. Hansbrough had said after Game 5 he was mystified by Andersen’s actions.

“I didn’t think it was a basketball play,’’ Hansbrough said. “I usually don’t talk. I don’t think he was saying anything before. It just came out of the blue, and I was caught off guard.’’

The suspension will cost Andersen $12,292. That's equivalent of one game check for Andersen, making a prorated minimum salary of $1,352,181.

It's the second straight year Miami has been undermanned inside in a Game 6 at Indiana. The Heat last year had forward Udonis Haslem and center Dexter Pittman both suspended for Game 6 of an East semifinal. However, they were able to win 105-93 to claim the series, 4-2.

Miami Coach Erik Spoelstra, who had said earlier Friday that whatever happened to Andersen was out of the Heat's hands, was not immediately available for comment after the suspension was announced. Because suspended players cannot be replaced, Miami only will be able to activate 12 players for Saturday’s game.</center>

Should have been booted from game 5. What a piece of work this guy is. He's been a huge cog to Miami's success this series and he puts himself out a game for absolutely no reason. Clown.

I dont understand how you dont get kicked out of game 5 but then after review they deem it game 6 suspendable....means the refs messed up in game 5 basically.. right?

No, it means Danny Crawford's experienced crew was right and David Stern/NBA are a pus!
What do you expect Stern is an attorney not a baller.

This is my opinion, yes. How he didn't get tossed out of game 5 is beyond me. Maybe cause Hansbrough didn't flop? What a joke.

I think Anderson is back on the stuff.....he was a fan fav when in OKC with the Hornets and almost everywhere he goes cause he plays so hard...reminds me of Rodman with more offensive skills

Reminds me of Joakim Noah except Noah's not a complete jackass.

Deep down Joakim Noah's only regret is that he wishes he could shoot as well as the "complete jackass".

Andersen career FG%: .512
Noah career FG%: .507

Andersen carrer FT%: .644
Noah career FT%: .727

So they both shoot ~51% from the field and Noah is a significantly better FT shooter. And deep down he wishes he could shoot as well as Birdman? Interesting theory.

On the big stage the 2013 Playoffs:
The Birdman is shooting 37-43, 86 percent from the field and 25-33, 75.8 percent from the line.
In the ECF vs Pacers, shooting 15-15, 100% from the field, and 6-7 from the line.
Dream on....not to forget the numerous blocked shot swats like the last one on Psycho T.

43 shots and 33 free throws. Yeah that seems like a significant sample size.

I'm not going to deny that Andersen has had a great postseason...in fact I stated he has been a huge part of Miami's success. That's what makes his thug actions in game 5 even dumber.

And to say that Noah "wishes" he could trade any part of his game for Andersen's is a complete joke. Birdman > Noah? Dream on. (<)<

The Heat didn't sign Birdman to shoot jumpshots. In fact the coaching staff probably flinched when he shot that one....but he's a confident birdman at the moment.
Do you watch any of the games....the Pacers can only wish there guys would finish layups and shots around the rim with the efficiency of the Birdman.

So which is it? Noah wishes he could shoot like Birdman? Or does he just wish he was as efficient as Birdman?

In truth the only thing Noah wishes is that his team was still playing; other than that he is 20x the player this joker will ever be.

He bothers me... He's let his teams down on multiple occasions by getting suspended.

Not a huge Rodman fan, but people comparing the two are insane. Don't let the ink go to your heads.

Comparing an all time great and Anderson? Rodman could guard anyone, great rebounder, and very underrated passer. He also set screens to free up teammates all the time. I don't see this in Anderson, he's a decent role player, but that's it.
