Anyone dealing with cicada

For those that aren't aware every 17 years, these things come up from the ground. I think it's to mate... They are everywhere in my hometown....

Never heard of em until this year, even though i've always lived on the east coast. glad I'm not there.

Not dealing with them right now but I remember when I lived in Cincinnati we did one year. They put them on pizzas at several joints on the years they do come out.

One year I had about 15 of these holes in my front yard, it turned out they were cicada-killer wasp nests.

I have never eaten it personally not would I. I do know people who swear they are delicious.

I think they came out in 1988 and 2005 here, don't know why they would be back so soon.

There are different broods on different cycles.

Pretty sure it was 2004 when I was living in Cincy and they came out, so I guess that was brood X.

They only come out once every 17 years? I've seen this these things every summer back in Nebraska. You can't miss them. They crawl out of the ground, climb a tree trunk and shed their skins, which leaves a hard exoskeleton that's kind of cool to play with as a kid. They also have an unmistakeable sound they make and they all get to sounding in unison. We called them locusts...even though that's not what they are.

The Magicicada does come out in 17 year cycles depending on brood. What you were seeing every summer were most likely locusts not true cicada...

Well, lets be clear....locusts are actually grasshoppers, that's a whole different interesting insect. I never understood why we called cicadas locusts. Anyway, I was reading and there are annual cicadas. The one's you are seeing have synchronized development so they all come out at the same time. There are many more species that have unsynchronized development, which are the ones I had seen my entire childhood.

Gotcha. I just remember they were making a big deal about the Magicicada (17 year) when they came out. Not sure what the big difference is but I think it's that the 17-year ones come out in bigger swarms.

That's how I understand it. I can't seem to recall ever seeing a cicada brood. I remember one year where there was a plague of moths. They were everywhere. You'd start your car and literally hundreds would fly out from underneath.

I've had them in my front lawn for the past 3 summers. I still don't know how to get rid of them. Anyone have any ideas?
