[h=3]NEW YORK (AP)[/h] Kellen Winslow Jr. turned a three-day tryout into another chance at reviving his NFL career.

The former Pro Bowl tight end was signed to a one-year deal by the New York Jets on Friday after a solid performance during the team's minicamp this week.

Winslow was brought in on a tryout basis and impressed coach Rex Ryan, who wouldn't comment Thursday as to whether a signing was imminent but seemed to indicate he was pleased with what he saw.

''That athleticism and his ability to catch the football,'' Ryan said, ''it certainly jumps out.''

Winslow received a call from the Jets last Saturday, flew to the New York area Monday and was practicing the next day. He was active during the minicamp practices, making several catches on throws from both Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith. He was also used red-zone drills, in particular, with a few of his receptions coming in those situations.
''He's still a very athletic guy,'' Ryan said. ''How many catches he had specifically, I'm not sure, but you certainly feel his presence.''

Winslow, who turns 30 next month but said his sometimes troublesome knees were healthy, adds depth to a position thin on experience after New York allowed Dustin Keller to leave as a free agent. Jeff Cumberland, with 32 career catches in three seasons, has been the projected starter, with Konrad Reuland, a solid blocker, and former rugby player Hayden Smith the backups.

Winslow played in just one game last season with New England before asking for his release. He expected to get another shot, but was left wondering about his NFL career this offseason when no calls came. Winslow said after his first practice with the Jets that ''I have years left.''

Before leaving the team's locker room Thursday, Winslow said he hadn't heard yet if he would be signed by the Jets but made it clear he thought he could add something to Marty Mornhinweg's offense.
''I feel like it would be a great spot,'' Winslow said. ''I like it here. I like the team, I like the teammates. Hopefully, I can stay.''

Winslow, the son of Hall of Famer and former Chargers star Kellen Winslow, was a first-round draft pick of Cleveland in 2004. After a broken right leg as a rookie and a torn knee ligament the next year, Winslow had 89 catches in 2006 and made the Pro Bowl as an alternate the following year.

He was traded to Tampa Bay in 2009 and had solid seasons of 77, 66 and 75 catches. The Buccaneers traded him to Seattle before last season, but he was waived in September after declining to reduce his salary. He signed with New England a few weeks later and played one game with one catch for 12 yards before asking for and being granted his release.

''We thought Kellen did a nice job given the fact that you get off a plane, you get into a meeting, and a couple hours later you're out on the field,'' general manager John Idzik said. ''I think all things considered, he did a pretty good job.''

FLORHAM PARK — Kellen Winslow Jr. always believed he’d be where he is now.
Even when he was sitting at home a few months ago, anxiously waiting for a phone call from an NFL team — any team, really — that would give him another chance.
“It was very hard,” the New York Jets tight end said Tuesday. “Besides my motorcycle accident (in 2005), it was the toughest part of my career. And it was unnecessary.”
Winslow played in just one game last year — one catch for New England — after being a late-summer cut by Seattle, a situation at which he is still bitter. He had a solid training camp with the Seahawks, but was released just before the season. Winslow said the move was over money, and he reportedly didn’t want to restructure his contract.
“That’s just the way they do things over there, I guess,” he said. “But I’m back, and it’s good to be back. I’m happy to be back.”
The Jets offered him a tryout in minicamp in June, signed him a few days later and he could end up being one of the smartest signings of the season — as long as he can stay healthy.
The former Pro Bowl tight end had a terrific debut Sunday, catching a team-leading seven passes for 79 yards and a touchdown in the 18-17 win over Tampa Bay while also serving as a dependable option for rookie quarterback Geno Smith.
“When it’s clutch time and it’s time to make a play, that’s what I live for, man,” Winslow said. “That’s what it’s all about. I don’t want to let these guys down, and vice versa.”
Winslow is only two years removed from catching 75 passes for Tampa Bay in 2011, but a balky and surgically repaired right knee and the fact he turned 30 this summer might have scared off some teams. Sensing he’d get very little playing time, he asked for his release last season after that one game with the Patriots, who he’ll face Thursday night.
“It was just wrong timing,” he said, adding he enjoyed his brief time in New England. “Rob Gronkowski was there, Wes Welker was there and Aaron Hernandez was coming back real soon from injury, and it was just wrong timing.

Kellen Winslow hit with 4-game ban

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets tight end Kellen Winslow has been suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
Winslow, who has a team-high 17 receptions for 169 yards and two touchdowns, will miss games against Pittsburgh, New England, Cincinnati and New Orleans. He'll be eligible to return to the Jets on Nov. 4, the day after the Jets host the Saints.

In a statement from his publicist, Winslow apologized and said the news "came as a huge surprise."
"I have investigated all possible sources since learning of the positive test, including possible medical causes, but frustratingly, I do not know the source," Winslow said in the statement. "I do not take supplements that list any banned ingredients, but the NFL policy is very strict, so I am accountable for the results.
"I sincerely apologize to my teammates, coaches and Jets fans for this situation. I will work extremely hard during this time away from the field and look forward to contributing to the team as soon as the suspension ends."
The news was announced two hours after coach Rex Ryan's early afternoon news conference. Winslow was excused from practice on Friday morning, and was listed as doubtful on the team's official injury report. When asked for further information, Ryan was evasive.
"I'd rather not get into it," the coach said. "I excused him, I'll just say that."
The Jets signed Winslow to a one-year contract in June, following a three-day tryout. The 30-year-old was looking to resurrect his career, after playing in just one game last season, for the New England Patriots. After he was signed, Winslow said his goal was to catch 100 passes this year.

Winslow was the sixth overall pick in the 2004 draft by the Cleveland Browns, and made the Pro Bowl in 2007, when he had 82 catches for a career-high 1,106 yards and five touchdowns. But he has also worn out his welcome in multiple places, being traded away by the Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and subsequently released by the Seattle Seahawks and Patriots.
He has also been injury prone. Winslow broke his right leg just two games into his rookie season, and tore the ACL in his right knee in a motorcycle crash a year later. He's had multiple surgeries on that knee, and the Jets have been managing his practice time because of them.
Winslow is the second Jets player suspended by the NFL this season. Running back Mike Goodson was also banned four games for violating the NFL's policy and program for substances of abuse.
Without Winslow, the Jets will lean more heavily on tight end Jeff Cumberland, a four-year veteran who had three catches for a career-high 79 yards and a touchdown in a win against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night.
Ryan praised Cumberland on Monday, before the announcement of Winslow's suspension.
"This is a guy who's a young stud tight end," Ryan said. "He's a big guy, can block, and he does a nice job receiving. So he's a good player."
The Jets also have Konrad Reuland and Zach Sudfeld at that position. Reuland had 11 catches for 83 yards last season as a rookie, and has one catch this year. Sudfeld, an undrafted rookie, was claimed off waivers from the Patriots last week, and Ryan said he would play if Winslow could not.
Information from ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini was used in this report.

Winslow is Aaron Hernandez without the murder charge. His career is a what-could've-been.
