one of my biggest mistakes was hiring friends and family who were not serious. I hired them as a favor to them because they needed a job. Yet things went bad and fast. I know one of the unwritten rules is not to go into business with family but I do not fully agree with this. I have had alot of success by partnering up with a family member and a few motivated friends who have the same goals as I do

what are some of the mistakes you have made along the way?
When my crew size grew I couldn't say as hands on as I should have as the work rolled in. Big mistake. Thought the guys could handle it but they slacked off when I wasn't around. Lost some customers then I down sized.

Have had this problem many times.
stop doing it because ... Like you said. Hey just don't take it serious. And figure they can get away with anything.

i also have this with my daughter who works sometimes in my wife's business. And if I try to match her up with another girl, that girl quits or my daughter will say nothing but bad things about her. Stuff like, she's always on the phone.. She's texting, etc

when it's my daughter that's on the phone all the time.

Seems I have these convo's with my friends with there own businesses often... two main things that come to mind...

1. They wished they put more back into the business, instead of a bigger slice for themselves, because ultimately they could have made more in the long run....
2. Over-Hiring (normally friends/fam) Hiring someone for a job they could do themselves

depending what kind of business you can waste alot of money on advertising (spent thousands back in the day on yellow pages/phone book with very little return)...reading up on google/bing etc business site submissions/keywords has been the best free advertising along with a good website. Vehicle wraps have also generated a good amount of business for us.

Depending on the business, a facebook page can be great advertising.

How often do you all deal with chargebacks, and how do you deal with... ie, internet/phone purchaser makes purchase, then card holder claims it wasn't him

I have little experience here but have had it happen. We use financing contracts that are signed twice by each party ( most of my business is engaged or married couples) and still have the bank side with them 75% of the time.

On of my silent partners I had on a couple developments used to always tell me it's better to make a penny a day than a quarter a month. Took me some time and hard lessons to figure out what he meant. Now I use that theory every day in business.

Print advertising is all but dead now unless your business caters to mostly the 50 and older crowd.
Spend all your money on high quality online advertising, give a good service and then let word of mouth take over.

It usually cost you a dollar to save a dime

this - - I worked for a small company once and the boss was always trying to cut corners to save money and it always came back to bite her
almost every time -- better to just hire quality people and do quality work and pay the extra cost -- you will save in the long run.
