Oakland Athletics: Is Bartolo Colon a Cy Young Candidate?DANNY SAEED 1 hour ago
When speaking of Cy Young candidates in the American League, do not forget to mention the 40 year-old pitcher for the Oakland Athletics: Bartolo Colon.
Forget about the age, the 15-year veteran Colon is having an outstanding season on the mound. With an impressive record of 10-2 followed by a tremendous ERA of 2.93, Colon has been the Athletics’ ace thus far.
While Colon is not quite the pitcher he once was in 2005 when he won the Cy Young award, he still has some very solid stuff along with great knowledge and experience that is second to none.
Teammate A.J. Griffin said, “There’s no one more aggressive in the strike zone than Bartolo. He knows the situation, knows what he should do and knows what he shouldn’t do. And he executes.”
One of the significant abilities of Colon is how he is able to maintain such composure; whether he gives up numerous hits or pitches a great game, his calm demeanor is certainly key to his success.
The Oakland A’s pitching staff is relatively young for the most part, so Colon serves as a mentor for them. When you have one of the youngest rosters in baseball, having a veteran with experience who has had himself a solid career is incredibly important and valuable to have on the roster.
Colon currently ranks second in the American League in wins with 10, and 10th in ERA with an average of 2.93. He may not have the velocity on his fastball that he once had, however he can still surprise you with the 95 mph fastball along with some nasty breaking balls.
The veteran is on pace for one of his best seasons in his long career, if not his best season. If he continues to pitch the way he has been throughout this year, it will not even be a question whether the 40-year-old is a Cy Young candidate or not.
