Bandys High ace Harvey signs contract with OriolesBY ALLEN HAYNES Record Sports Writer 06/25/2013 10:42 PM

BALTIMORE, Md. -- With the signing of his name on a piece of paper, Hunter Harvey cashed in on years of hard work and dedication when he signed with the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday and received a $1,947,600 signing bonus.

A 6-foot-3, 175-pound right-hander, Harvey was 8-0 last season at Bandys High with an ERA of 0.38. He struck out 116 and walked 17. He was 7-0 as a junior with 106 strikeouts and 15 walks.

The Orioles, who made Harvey the 22nd pick in the Major League Baseball first-year players draft on June 6, project him as a starting pitcher.

“This has been amazing,” Harvey said. “All the stuff that I’ve been able to do here and see and then be able to sign my first professional contract has been a great experience.

This has been my dream all my life, watching big league games on television and hoping one day that I could be there and then finally signing a contract to have a chance to work and get there is just amazing.”

Harvey flew to Baltimore on Monday with his mom Lisa to meet with Baltimore management and get his physical.

His dad, former Major League pitcher Bryan Harvey, who had 177 saves for the Angels and Marlins from 1987-95 and made two All-Star teams (1991 and 93) during a nine-year career, drove up and joined them on Monday night.

Once the Orioles confirmed that everything with the physical was approved, Hunter Harvey signed the contract Tuesday afternoon.

Hunter then had the opportunity to meet and talk with Baltimore manager Buck Showalter and most of the Orioles’ players.

Harvey will begin his journey to reach Camden Yards when he leaves Thursday to join the Gulf Coast League Orioles in Sarasota, Fla.

“I just can’t wait to get down there and start my pro career,” Hunter Harvey said. “I don’t think it will be too bad being away from home knowing that I get to play baseball.”

Bryan Harvey was excited to see a second son sign a professional baseball contract. Hunter’s older brother Kris was drafted in the fifth round out of Bandys High by the Atlanta Braves in 2002 but chose to go to college at Clemson. Kris was later drafted in the second round of the 2005 draft and signed with the then Florida Marlins.

“Seeing Kris sign was an exciting time and now obviously seeing Hunter go in the first round with the 22nd pick was an exciting time,” Bryan Harvey said. “It’s been a really good experience up here in Baltimore and now Hunter gets to go into reality. We’re sitting in a big league clubhouse watching these big league players and meeting these guys and then Thursday he will go to Sarasota and start his journey.”
