PETA wants Rays to remove fish tank from ballpark
Letter to organization mentions a recent home run that was hit into tank.

PETA has written a letter to the Tampa Bay Rays asking them to remove a “touch tank” from behind their center field wall in Tropicana Field. A “touch tank” is a fish tank filled with cownose rays where people are allowed to pet the rays inside.

The letter seems to be spurred by a recent Miguel Cabrera home run that landed in the tank.

From a statement from PETA:

“The rays held captive at Tropicana Field not only were traumatically taken from their vast home waters but also are subject to harassment, loud crowds, and even baseballs capable of seriously injuring them. When it comes to compassion, the Rays are batting .000.”

The letter mentions Cabrera’s home run directly, which did not hit any of the rays. (You can see video of the home run below.) In eight years with the tank at Tropicana Field, home runs have been hit into it two times.

The letter goes on to point out that other “touch tanks” in Calgary, California, and Washington, D.C. have led to the deaths of the rays living inside them at a very high rate.

The Rays have not yet responded to the most recent letter.

It's a slippery slope on both sides imo - I struggle sometimes with my own consumption of animals, but, at least I'm feeding myself with them. Just keeping animals in cages seems unnecessary to me, unless they're being used for research or for their own good. I do agree that PETA could probably use this focus on other animal-related issues, but it's not as though all of PETA is working on the Rays.

As an aside, I'm really looking forward to this documentary coming out, that is about a closely-related issue...

PETE should be classified as domestic terrorist group. These people are crazy.

If someone kept me in a small room for most of my life I'd be pissed too; just like the Croc Hunter or that idiot that lived with the bears, you are messing with WILD ANIMALS. There are a ton of alligators where I live and trust me if I see one I am headed the other way.

the problem with PETA is that their logic is flawed.

they think that killing an animal is unethical.

that would be like saying having sex is unethical... it is if you do it with a child or your sister but the vast majority of the time it's A-OK

If you watch how animals are killed for food it is brutal. Not that killing anything isn't but these animals suffer before they die. That's what PETA has a problem with.

I think the idea is that any consumption of animal, or animal byproduct, is unnecessary and therefore selfish in nature. We don't need it and we are intelligent enough creatures that we can make choices in our lives... So our choice to cause other living creatures pain is unacceptable to PETA.

All that said, I continue to eat meat and dairy. And I do think PETA could certainly use different tactics, and be less militant, if they really wanted people to listen to their message... They remind me of Charlie Brown's parents, talking from off-screen.

It's not a natural environment; people sticking their hands into the tanks, kids probably pounding on it, etc...I don't have an opinion either way but I would not want to be stuck in a tank. Free WILLY.

The logical approach is to move the tank to an area where the fans can still "pet" the rays but where home runs/ fly balls cant have any effect.

Otherwise if peta wants to biotch about aquariums they need to be biotching to every doctors office in america.

...I mean this is as silly as peta as ever gotten.

if someone who belongs to PETA or believes in their causes ever addresses you about what's right or wrong, tell them your favorite dish is veal parmigiana and watch them freak out

what PETA doesn't understand is how cruel the real world is to animals, they eat each other, and in a very gruesome fashion

mankind has survived killing animals since the advent of mankind

and when their extreme members argue a dog's life is just as important as a human's, I can only laugh in their faces

That'd probably get a decent reaction, but if you really want to send them over the edge, think force-fed geese.
