Why didn't Mariano Rivera pitch the 9th inning?

I didn't watch any of the game but why not put him in during the 9th for the save?

if it were me I'd have Nathan pitching the 9th instead of Rivera. If by chance the NL gets a run or gets multiple base runners, I'd put in Rivera...he is no stranger to getting the nod in pressure situations.

because there was always the chance that the nationals would take the lead in the bottom of the 8th and then Rivera wouldn't get to pitch.

but if the nats score a run or get multiple baserunners u put in rivera in the 8th. He will get to pitch regardless. he might even have gotten the AL out of a potential jam. if the 9th goes 1-2-3 then he gets the 9th?

i don't really see the problem

The introduction wouldn't have been as special... by starting him in an inning he was able to come out to his song, get a standing O from the fans, players, etc... would have looked silly had all this been done mid inning.

The real question is why did he get MVP

Who else made more of a difference in a game where everyone basically pitches 1 inning and gets 1or 2 at bats. Classy move by MLB for a guy that has been nothing but class for almost 20 years in the league.
