Mine is out of control long, about 20 mins today...

Only a year old laptop, granted I constantly downloading stuff, but what can I do to speed up the start up time. It's only time it's slow.

You're starting your Toaster, Defy... cut back on the Jack Daniels and you'll be ok.. also quit pissing into the washing machine.

I would sweep that laptop for viruses, then malware. once it's confirmed free of both... remove the virus protection that you have... it's not working well if you had a virus.. and if you didn't have one... it sounds like it is slowing down your pc. then i would do a CC Cleaner for caches, cookies, and temp memory. and finally... there is a program called "decrapifier" that will uninstall the crap that comes with new laptops. I don't see why you can't use it one year into use.

no way a 1 yr old laptop should be taking "20 minutes".

What brand? When you first purchased it, did you uninstall all the crapware that came with it? If it's not too much of a pain, you might want to purchase a copy of the OS, so you can install it cleanly whenever you want (as opposed to a version with all the spammy shit the maker put on there).

Honestly, for people who only do email, web browsing, docs, netflix, etc... Just install Linux. Ubuntu is super user-friendly, takes nothing to maintain, and you essentially don't need anti-virus/anti-spam software (aside from for your web browser).

When is the last time you defragged your hdd?

Also this:
I constantly downloading stuff
is a bad habit. Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall things you don't need. You're gonna have a bunch of unnecessary shit going on during the boot up process and then running in the background. Once booted up and you have the crap uninstalled, control-alt-delete and check out the programs you have running in the background. Google everything you don't recognize and uninstall or disable non-critical processes.

time for a new laptop:)

on a more serious note, maybe you have one or more heavy programs that are slowing your machine down

also try cleaning it up as some have suggested

my son has built me 3 new machines and they all are amazingly fast including the start-up. They all have Windows 7 too, which may have something to do with it

PS: I know jack shit about computers, so everything I said may be incredibly stupid (except the part about being incredibly fast and buying a new machine)

I think the problem is that you've downloaded too much crazy to your hard drive.

alright going to work on these suggestions now. thanks guys

I guess virus scanners take up a lot of usage? I have 3, Avast, AVG and malwarebytes....

By 20 mins, I mean 20 mins, from the time I started it up, to the time, I could load a Chrome Window....
