Did you take a prep course, if so which one? Also, what is the cost of the courses. I am looking for 2014 possibly 2015, but have some down time right now.

If you have downtime, then nows the time. Set a lot aside while preparing for mine

Where are you trying to go?
The test has changed in the last couple of years, but if you are fairly bright-you can get in the 600-650 range (old scoring) with 3 months self study.
If you are trying to go top 25...I would get in a class for sure.

Top 25, if not, probably not going. I have a fairly unique background compared to most, that is my advantage in the app process. Terrible undergrad grades, but graduated about 15 years ago, so hopefully, current accomplishments out way grades.

If you have good work experience, that really helps and eases the score needed a little..if you can score a 700-720 with the experience you say you have, you should have a legit shot for sure. Anything less than a 660, and you're most likely out in a hurry. Good luck...

Worked in the media covering sports for a decade and published a book. I figure there aren't that many in B school in that area, more Wall Street types and corporate people.

Just go make a 780 and be done with it :)

-good luck, bud. And yea, I agree, I like your credentials, and so should they. I'm with you in that my first years of college, my grades were basically a disaster, but I came on strong and had a shit ton of viable work experience to match. Hell some of my classmates (a lot actually), were spoiled rich kids who hadn't worked a day in their life. Granted, they were smart as all get out though. Well common sense aside...lol

Why set the bar so low with a 780. Just call me El Presidente, throwing the perfect game, putting up an 8 hundo

I would estimate that you need a minimum of 6 mths to get near 700 regardless of which prep material you take.
You have been out for a while...and it takes a minute to get reacquainted.
I took it after being out for 9 years...studied a few books a few hours a day for a couple of months and scored a 630.

Have a friend who works for Princeton Review and knows all this stuff pretty well.

Says for GMAT, Veritas is the best (they all lie somewhat about reported scores since people who bomb are less likely to report and just forget the whole process)

Online is probably like $800, live classroom probably like $1500 or something.

It is competitive and you should really have a defined plan of what you want to use the MBA for because between time/money invested it is not a small investment (just figured I'd add that in)

Not to shoutout another board but 2+2 has a decent MBA/GMAT section on their site.
