I am no investor but it sure seems 3d printing is the future for everything. Why shouldnt I put some money into one or two of the key players in 3d printing?

No reason why you shouldn't other than one company might come in and wipe them all out, but if they buy the smaller guys then its big dollars for you.

Who are the "key players" ?

Legal issues will limit their scope, IMO. It's definitely not in the interest of big business for these to go mainstream, so lobbies will fight to make them illegal due to the concern that joe nobody will print a fully auto bazooka in his back yard. Only time will tell if and when they'll push through to the mainstream, but just something I would consider prior to investing. I can tell you though that, Chinese manufacturing companies will be using them if it can make them more productive/efficient.

I'm an investor in a 3d printing place in chicago. Making money faster than we can print it at the moment.

Most 3D printers seeing accelerating sales growth

Arcam reported year-on-year sales growth of 58.3% for the most recent quarter ended June, more than double its 2012 sales growth of 26.6%.

Sales growth is also accelerating at other 3D printers, including Stratasys (NASDAQ: SSYS) and ExOne. 3D is the exception.

What would be the name of a company to invest in? the 3-d printer company themselves? a parts maker or product supplier? or all the above?

3DP is without doubt a HUGE opportunity. Not the easiest to invest in as so much of the economic benefits will go to large industrials that incorporate within their existing value chain. There is consolidation in the pure play sector so I'd spread your money across 2-3 companies, although don't be surprised if eventually all the shares are in the same enterprise!

Take a trip to the Autodesk Gallery in San Francisco and you’ll see all manner of products that have been helped along with the company’s design software--the electric Pi Cycle bike, a 3D-HD autostereoscopic display, a model of the new Bay Bridge span, and more. One day, that gallery might include human organs.
Autodesk recently announced that it’s teaming up with bioprinting company Organovo to develop software that can design human tissue to be printed out on 3-D printers. In the near future, the printed organs are expected to be used in research. But down the line, they could end up inside real, live humans--an alternative to today’s inefficient organ donation process
