NFL Tight Ends cannot stay healthy

Is there something about tight ends that make them more injury prone? Is it their position on the field (blocking and catching in the center of the field)? Are they trying to get tight ends that have speed now and in turn sacrificing crucial body mass that keeps them healthy?

Tony G has been pretty healthy for a while....but seeing Pitta out makes me look back....i know Gronk is an injury prone beast. A Hernandez is always either injured or shooting his buddies. I feel like Jimmy Graham was hurt a good part of the year too.

(makes me think using a fantasy pick on a TE in an early round is a waste)

tough position to stay healthy. maybe the most durable has been Miller with 8 straight seasons of 14+ starts but he's nowhere near ready for 2013 after popping his knee late last year so that streak in jeopardy too

Lots of contact in that position.

yeah, i'd think it was the position....but you have guys like Tony G and A Gates that have been around for decades and have been pretty healthy.

I think the position is full of contact and the new breed of TEs are tall, slim, and athletic.....like trying to put a lebron james at TE....he would be awesome and dominant, but the contact will eventually put a hurt on him. You need a slower bigger guy at TE...they would probably block a little better and stay a little healthier. Going with the slim guys will get you more production but you have to be lucky (not get hurt), or you need a dozen of them on your pratice squad.

Gronk might just be a wuss in general

Definitely the position. Pittas injury is rare in football and apparently is more commonly found in car accident victims.
