Obviously in reality it takes a combination of things to be successful, but what is the most important characteristic?

Be able to change up your game.. staying too predictable or stagnant is setup for doom

staying in the right mind frame... particularly after bad beats, or an extended losing streak

Of course you need a basic understanding of strategies but I have always said after that it's bankroll management. Playing with money that means too much to you will make you very exploitable. Bankroll management cures most tilt also.

If i had to narrow it down to one I would have to say patience.

If you could be truly patient all the time, even after bad beats, you would probably win in the long run

These are all good answers, but I going to tell you the single most important quality that guys who I play against have and that play for a living.
The ability to FOLD. Too many players go crazy one or two hands. Patience is a great and necessary quality.

Patience for sure, but you also have to have the balls to let it ride sometimes...

The ability to look at a hand as if you were looking at it from the perspective of someone who was standing behind you.

I suppose, but this is so basic I kind of ruled it out.

It's almost like saying the most important attribute of a winning poker player is that he knows the rules of poker. Haha.

Yeah good post, 99% of bad poker players just cannot fold in critical spots when they should.

Heart, Courage , No fear of losing the money u have on the table. Doyle wrote it in his book and just yesterday i heard an interview with Tom Dwan who said the same thing. If they were offered 2 to 1 on a coin flip for a million dollars they would do it in a heartbeat. Doyle said he would do it for ALL his money cus he knows he could win it all back if he lost.
On the other hand i have sat down at the casino before with money that meant a lot to me and got KK on the 1st hand. I re-raised an early raiser and when he insta shoved i folded. Now he may have had AA but more likely i was better than a 2-1 fav over his entire range. But i didnt go there to play 1 hand and leave and i didnt want to risk all my money on what amounted to a coin flip. Its much safer to just sit there 4 or 5 hours and grind a small profit. And playing safe is why im an broke SOB and Doyle and Tom are worth millions...You have to have the guts to gamble ANYTIME you think u have an edge. I cant do it no matter how hard i try.

the ones who don't know a flush beats a straight are out of the equation entirely....my wife does not belong in this conversation.

but you will be surprised how many people do not know how to calculate pot odds and still like to play a good amount of poker.
