This may sound like a dumb question, but recently moved here to Costa Rica for a year.

I am living in the Central Valley (Atenas area) and looking for a place to place bets. Would I have to go all the way to San Jose to say Del Ray? I guess I could just reload an offshore account, just not sure where I would have them mail the payment.

Also, anwyhere for college/NFL football games int this area? I will probably have to make the trip to Escazu or San Jose, but was hoping for something closer.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Del Rey hasn´t had a book internally for a long time. I believe the Tropical (across the street) has a book on the second floor. You can load up there and they will give you an online account. You can do your bets from Atenas. By the way, how´s the internet service there?

Slow, but stable.

The house we are renting already had CRWIFI setup. From a few speed tests I ran, looks like I am on a 2mbs/1mbs connection.

Thanks for Tropical tip, anyone know anywhere in Grecia or Atenas that will have the ticket. Or probably go to Alejuela or Escazu?

VC,

Atenas is a nice area, but man is it a ways out from the heart of the Central Valley. Your closest venue (not knowing Atenas/Grecia well) is probably the Fiesta Casino by the airport. Things went downhill over the years but they have the Ticket. As far as betting windows the only ones I know of are the Sleep Inn next to the Hotel Del Rey and the Sportsmens usually has a guy taking action.

Enjoy your year in CR.

Yeah I agree, a lot further out than I want to be. I would have even preferred the Herradura/Jaco area.

However, I got 3 little ones and a wife. So my gambling, drinking, and sports decisions hold little weight.

Jaco is quite a bit further from SJ that Atenas is. Plus, it´s hot as shit. I think you got it right in Atenas.

Go hang out at Chubbs 2. You should be able to find someone to take your action.

Good luck, FSU is like an Ivy league school down here. You should switch allegiance to killa U (UF) or Cheat U (Miami) or Crack & Nascar U (CF). That way you'll get to meet new and exciting friends!

I just got back from visiting Costa Rica, the city San Jose is not at all what I expected, I guess I should have researched more. I asked for a good bar to go out to in the city and ended up in some dangerous part that had druggies on the streets begging for money, but the scenery inside was good. Mostly american guys and latin girls. But since I was there on business in the sportsbook industry, I asked around about a local place to watch and bet, and one of the american guys said he used to go to a place called Hotel Morazan, he said on the second floor there was a place, but he said it was pretty shitty. I just looked on google, I see they have a casino, but doesn't say anything about a sprotsbook, but I see other links saying it is there. Not sure if that is close to where you are, but thought I would pass it along.

These would be my first 2 choices on places to watch games (and bet), in this order. Sleep Inn sportsbook is a little tricky to find as its not in the Colonial Casino and difficult to find even if you walk into the actual hotel. There is a single entrance from the parking lot and is usually not signed well. It is really the only formal walk-up window to bet where you get a legit ticket and can read odds on a board (apart from the book at the Morazon -- which isn't a very comfortable place to hang out).

Chubbs is decent also, good food and drink prices, but just not as spacious as these other venues and can get very crowded (I haven't been to the new location).

Hangman, wish I would have had this info some few weeks back, I was right next to that place when I visited. But I am going back next year, will check it out for sure.

Pocketrockets, thanks for the offer, having a savvy expat's advice would sure go a long way for the very unsavvy in Costa Rica. Next time I will ask for some advice. Should have asked anyone before my first trip, I was stupid, San Jose was not the picture perfect paradise I thought of when I was checkin out tropical rain forests pics online.

Is not, its messy, its shady... you have to know the drill to be less exposed, avoid walking alone at night, meaning after 8-9. During the day is as safe as can be. It's been a while since I bet in downtown SJ, almost 3 years, can't really tell you about good poker games or places to bet. For tail, obviously the Del Rey is the first choice, poker games are soft but the rake is ridiculous.

For the most part SJ is a nice city, perfect for partying and being a degenerate. Other than that, is not a place I'd like to live in or stay.

Its by far the best spot to watch games as they have every game, plus red zone and it is air conditioned and comfortable seating designed for watching games.

The only game in town for poker in downtown SJ is Mona Lisa. Pretty loose game and I never like the idea of house players and they exist there. Agree that the rakes are very high, but alot of money can be won being patient in that game. Hey, whats wrong with degenerates?
