KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After beating the New York Mets and finishing their 9-game road trip with an 8-1 record, the Kansas City Royals bypassed one of the 5 teams standing in their way of a MLB post-season berth.
With the Royals win, and the NY Yankees 6-3 loss at San Diego, the Royals record of 56-52 is just one percentage point better than the Yankees at 57-53. Both the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians won on Sunday as well, so the Royals remain 7 and a half games back in the American League Central, and 4 and a half games back in the wildcard race.
Sunday’s win over the Mets help produce the best record for a 9-game road trip in franchise history. Ervin Santana got the win, pitching 6 innings while giving up just one earned run. Mike Moustakas homered, as the Royals collected 11 hits. Before the contest, catcher Salvador Perez was placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list. Pitcher Wade Davis was summoned away for a family emergency and it’s unknown if he’ll be available to pitch on his next scheduled day, which is Wednesday.
The Royals now open a 10-game home stand on Monday with Minnesota, Boston and Miami coming to Kauffman Stadium. The Royals play 16 of their next 21 games at home.

The Royals won for the 16th time in 20 games since the All-Star break. The Red Sox, who have the best record in the American League, lost for only the third time in 10 games.
