Giants at Steelers: What bettors need to know

Check out our cheat sheet for Saturday's NFL Week 1 matchup for the New York Giants at Pittsburgh Steelers:

New York Giants at Pittsburgh Steelers (-2.5, 35.5)

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said earlier in the week that the starters will "probably play about a quarter", though a few starters will miss out in the preseason opener. Namely, O-linemen James Brewer (concussion) and Chris Snee (undisclosed), as well as FB Henry Hynoski. WR Hakeem Nicks is suffering from a groin strain and is uncertain whether or not he will see the field, though the wideout says he is 100 percent. On the other side of the ball, Justin Tuck claims that the competition at the DE position is "heating up" and competition will be fierce with guys fighting for a limited number of jobs. The Giants finished the 2012 preseason 3-1 ATS, 2-2 SU and 1-3 O/U.

The starting unit for the Pittsburgh Steelers will get 10 to 12 snaps of action in the opener and rookie running back Le'Veon Bell will get a chance to show his stuff with the starters. Bell will play with the second unit as well, however, so that head coach Mike Tomlin can see where the rookie stands. Fellow RB's Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer will also get plenty of opportunity to show their stuff as the trio jockey for position in a heated RB battle. Pittsburgh finished the 2012 preseason with a record of 3-1 SU, 1-2-1 ATS and 3-1 O/U.

The two franchises met in Week 9 last season. The Giants prevailed at home by a score of 24-20 and covered as 3.5-point home dogs.

DAVE ESSLER MLB Saturday Thoughts

Washington-Philadelphia: I simply cannot back the Nationals against a LHP, and the very early money tends to agree.

Miami-Atlanta: There's every reason to think that Eovaldi COULD keep Atlanta in check. A lot depends on Friday's game, but Nate has only been touched for more than three runs once. Atlanta hit him last year, hence the -230 or whatever, but Wood simply CAN be had. Don't think this is a high scoring game, again, bullpen usage dependent.

Padres-Reds: The world will be on Cingriani and I get that, but Ross already burned me once (by pitching well) and we like the Padres better against LHP, so worst case scenario I may well take the Padres RL.

Cubs-Cardinals: Carlos was a freak show against the Dodgers, but my issue w/him is that's three straight 100+ pitch games for someone that's been a bullpen guy. I suppose that could work to his advantage, given he's probably more rested than most. Wacha's a young kid that the Cubs, nor many others, have seen. Beastly numbers w/Memphis this season, so probably under here, I would think. Probably decided by the bullpens.

Pirates-Cubs: We all know AJ hasn't been the same dominant pitcher on the road, but obviously still a force. My issue here is that although Pittsburgh beat the Fish three straight, they really were handed those game and hence perhaps a little over valued. I could make a case for the Rockies here.

Met-D-Backs: What I don't like about Wheeler in this spot is that he's a flyball pitcher in a small park, so if he's not getting the K's that could be a problem. And the same can be said about McCarthy, and ex-Oakland pitcher that benefited from the big park. I can see this game being higher scoring, especially if either team uses much bullpen Friday. Although without Montero, and the Mets sucking against RHP's this season, perhaps not. Lean D-Backs a little.

Tigers-Yankees: Welp, we obviously know that the book on Hughes has been fade him at home, but I've never liked Sanchez and honestly, no matter who plays the Yankee RL is only -125 so I would gladly take my chances.

Oakland-Toronto: Need to clarify who's pitching for the A's. Buehrle has been better at home and perhaps a bit cheaper after the Angels lit him up. Callaspo's status still a question mark. Both bullpens steady and this game may stay under. Like under better if Gray is pitching. Griffin just scares me.

Minnesota-White Sox: Probably all comes down to whether Rienzo throws balls or strikes. He can be wild and walk the park, or he can easily strikeout 10 in game. Pelfrey rarely pitches deep, so with these guys playing two on Friday one could reasonable assume that the bullpens matter even more here. Lean Twins and over, but haven't checked the weather and it DOES depend on tonight's game.

Angels-Indians: Clearly misprint with Wilson at only -115 over Ublado? Nope. We love the Indians much better against left handed pitching, and the Angels can't seem to hit anyone. All we'd need is for Ubaldo to get the ball somewhere near the plate to take the Indians. I couldn't bet on that happening, but would take the Indians and/or the over if you made me.

Boston-Kansas City: OK, Kyle, I like Boston here. Wasn't doubting Doubront's ability the other night as much as his mental focus. Actually like him a bit here against a team that's had trouble this season w/LHP against Guthrie, who obviously Boston saw tons of when he was with the Orioles

Around the Horn: The Pirates & PNC Park
Art Aronson | Aug 9, 2013 |

Pittsburgh just took three-straight from the Marlins and has won five straight overall. The Pirates are in Colorado over the weekend. Slugger Andrew McCutchen sat out Thursday's victory, but is expected back in the lineup at hitter-friendly Coors Field. McCutchen is 11 for 17 over his last six games.

The Bucs are getting contributions across the board, as they'd have to rally from behind in all three games vs. the Fish, while the bullpen worked 10 1/3 scoreless frames in the series.

Starting Rotation

AJ Burnett is 5-7 with a 2.73 ERA
Francisco Liriano is 12-4 with a 2.02 ERA
Gerrit Cole is 5-5 with a 3.95 ERA
Jeff Locke is 9-3 with a 2.47 ERA
Charlie Morton is 4-3 with a 3.88 ERA

2012 Park Factor (Park Factor compares the rate of stats at home vs. the rate of stats on the road. A rate below 1.000 favors the pitcher. Higher than 1.000 favors the hitter).

Runs: 0.764
HR: 0.631
H: 0.871
2B: 1.037
3B: 0.718
BB: 0.796

Interesting facts about PNC Park: After Three Rivers Stadium was imploded, PNC Park opened for the 2001 MLB season and seats just over 38,000. Construction took just 24-months in total and the design is a salute to other "classic style" ballparks such as Wrigley Field and Fenway Park (was the first "two-deck" facility to be built in the USA since Milwaukee County Stadium opened in 1953). It is the first stadium to feature an "out-of-town scoreboard" with the score, inning, count, number of outs and base runners for every other game being played around the league. In 2001 PNC Park was given a score of 95 out of 100 by ESPN.com. The Allegheny River is 443 feet from home plate and on July 6th, 2002, Daryle Ward was the first player to hit the river on the fly (however, on June 2, 2013, Garrett Jones become only the second player to hit the river and he was the first Pirate to accomplish the feat).

Has home field been an advantage for the Pirates over the last five years?

2008: 67-95 overall. 39-42 at home. 28-53 on road.
2009: 62-99 overall. 40-41 at home. 38-43 on road.
2010: 57-105 overall. 40-41 at home. 17-64 on road.
2011: 72-90 overall. 36-45 at home. 36-45 on road.
2012: 79-83 overall. 45-36 at home. 34-47 on road.

2013 as of writing: 70-44 overall. 41-20 at home. 29-24 on road.

Pittsburgh's core group of players has come together over the last few years, but over the previous four, home field has been anything but an advantage for the Pirates.

Upcoming Series

The Pirates welcome the Diamondbacks to town from the 16th-18th.

These teams played a three game set in Arizona in early April and the Diamondbacks went 2-1.

They played four times at PNC Park in 2012 and the Pirates went 2-2.

Braves paying off for bettors with fourteenth straight win

The Atlanta Braves won their fourteenth game in a row after opening a three-game set with the Miami Marlins with a 5-0 victory Friday.

Any $100 bettor would be up a nice sum of $1,183.07 if they had wagered the Braves in each of their previous 14 ball games.

A winning streak of this length needs contributions from everybody and the Braves have been no different. The NL's leading hitter, Chris Johnson (.338) was batting at a torrid clip before having an eight game multi-hit streak snapped in a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Aug. 3.

More recently, Justin Upton has been swinging a hot stick. Upton went 1-for-4 with one homer in Friday's victory. The LF has 11 hits in his previous 20 at-bats, is riding a 13-game hitting streak, and is batting .467 in eight August ball games.

The Braves will try to continue their winning ways as they continue the three-game home stand against the Marlins Saturday.

Atlanta is currently the favorite at -215.

Alex Wood will get the start for the Braves and will bid for his third-straight victory. The Marlins will counter with Nathan Eovaldi.
