I dont think any other team in the NFL has more 1st round draft picks on defense then the Saints.

I know thats hard to believe but true. The Saints rarely take an offensive player in the 1st round.

Will Smith
Malcolm Jenkins
Cam Jordan
Patrick Robinson
Kenny Vaccaro
John Vilma
Brodrick Bunkley
Chris Lofton

All of the above 1st round draft picks.

Saints moving to the 34 from the 43.

Us Saints fans have been saying for 3 years that the players on this roster is much more suited for the 34.

Kenny Vaccaro is putting on a show in training camp.
Was the #1 safety coming out of college this year and he is showing it.

That gives us Vaccaro, Jenkins, and Harper at the safety position.

You would be hard pressed to find more talent at safety then those 3.
Harper is still the highest paid safety in the NFL. Had the most sacks in a single season in NFL history just 2 years ago.
Harper was the most misused player on the entire team last season.

Sean Payton was gone and he hired a new DC in Steve Spagnuolo who was a disaster from day 1.
Spags is the kind of coach that brings his system to a team regardless of the personnel.

A good coach is a coach that comes in and fits his system around the players, not the players around the system.

Harper is a hybrid safety/linebacker.
Spags basically took the best blitzing/run stopping safety in the NFL and turned him into a cover safety.

This turned one of the Saints best players on defense into there worst player on defense overnight just by playing him wrong.

That one simple move spag made turned there best player into there worst player instantly because we had a DC without a clue.

I can go on and one about how spags mis played all 11 starters on the team.

With greg williams the Saints played press coverage.
The Saints DB's are press coverage DB's

Spags came in and turned them in to zone coverage DB's.

What an idiot.

The talent on this Saints D is nowhere near the worst in NFL history.

As a matter of fact there are some people close to the Saints that believes the Saints have more raw talent on defense then they do on offense.
I dont know if im willing to go that far but I can certainly understand those that share that opinion.

I am not here to tell you that the Saints defense is going to remind you of the 85 Bears.

But I am here to tell you that you need to throw all the talk about worst defense in NFL history out the window.

The Saints D is nowhere near that bad.

As a matter of fact this is the most talented D the Saints have had since the early 90's.

You can mark this down right now.

Rob Ryan is going to get a nice head coaching gig out all of this.

Because its going to seem like he is going to perform miracles with this team.

Its not that he is going to perform any sort of miracle. Its just the fact that Spags held this talented group way back last season.

This is going to give the appearance that Ryan turned all this around over night and he will be a hot commodity very soon for doing so.

And of course Sean Payton not being there last season and all the distractions of the bounty gate thing certainly did not help.

By what metric?

Points allowed or yards allowed?

Either way I feel like someone is gonna take you up on that.

I hope ur not baseing this on seeing last nights game. Oakland may well be the worst team in the NFL....in fact ill go ahead and say it...They are the worst team. They have NO offensive nor defensive linemen.

As far as the #1 picks go, Robinson is not very good, Vilma is likely done. Ill give u Harper but he's a horrible 1 on 1 cover guy. Jenkins is weak as well. Smith, Jordan and Vaccaro are legit and i wont be shocked if Vaccaro is the rookie if the year. Bunkley and Lofton are wait and see.

Fortunately all they have to do is not be the worst defense in the history of the NFL to improve upon last year. Losing those 2 free agents from Dallas has to hurt.

The thing overlooked last year was as compared to Super Bowl year was the offense didnt preform as well, didnt sustain drives and having the dfense on the field so much exposed all their weaknesses. Im not sure the O line and the running game are back in Super Bowl form yet. I really hated them losing that RB to the Jets.
If they cant keep the defense off the field or score 45 a game its a touchy situation.
Special Teams were not dominate last year and this year is not looking a whole lot better. Morgan was prolly their only legit return man and hes done for the year. They have others but only time will tell.

A big part of defense is field position and not having to always be playing from behind. I want to see more before betting those angles have been improved, certainly running over Oakland proved nothing...

Due to my extreme and irrational hatred of the Ryan brothers, I hope the Saints D gives up 500 yards and 40 points a game.

Being a Saints fan i hope this years defense meets its potential but its still very much a wait and see as there are plenty of question marks on that side of the ball. Seems a lot of fans are going "out there" cause of what they saw in that raiders game which is absolutely meaningless and carries no weight what so ever in what we can expect to see come regular season im afraid.

But i do prefer the style of defense now compared to spags style last season , so there is that. and lets hope for the best :smoking:

Don't see much of a pass rush without Butler and the Saints run defense was a sieve BEFORE Coleman went down. And to your original post chop, what does a player being drafted in the first round, have to do with anything? Bunkley was a colossal bust in Philly...
