Michael Vick continues to take big steps in becoming the leader of the Philadelphia Eagles, so his remarks after breaking up a fight during Thursday’s practice came as a bit of a surprise.

“I try to be the peacemaker, but these young dudes don’t respect me,” said Vick, according to Philly.com.
Vick was one of a number of players that jumped in to break up a skirmish between wide receiver Riley Cooper and cornerback Cary Williams.

Cooper was excused from the team for three days during training camp after he was seen on video making a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert. While Cooper apologized to the team shortly after that incident, Williams told the media at the time that he was hurt by the slur and it would take a while for him to accept Cooper’s apology.

Williams didn’t speak to the media after Thursday’s scuffle, but Cooper did, saying “It was nothing.”
Vick spoke more with the media after practice, saying he wasn’t happy with the team.

“Our maturity level has to be on a whole different plane,” Vick said. “Regardless of who the catalyst was for the whole fight, that doesn’t matter. We have to be men. We’re not guys who are out on the street, fighting one another. We’re teammates. It’s game week. We don’t have time for that. I don’t.
“It’s a distraction.”

A distraction isn’t a good thing for a football team as it prepares for Week 1 of what could be a long season for the Eagles. Vick saying the young guys don’t respect him is an even bigger issue.

It should be interesting to see how things play out this year in Philly.

Chip needs to bring the hammer down BIG TIME. Those "young dudes" don't respect anyone. While ALL young people have a certain level of disrespect and swagger (justified or not), THIS generation is truly out of control IMO. And so it's no surprise that you see the same thing in pro sports.

If they start benching people (I don't care WHO it is), and take the "next man up" philosophy, you'll see things change. Coaches who refuse to do that are destined for failure because the 20 somethings of today bring new meaning to the words selfish and entitled. No, it's not all of them. Might not even be a majority (but I think it is). But there is no doubt it's a LOT greater than it has been in the recent past. I think technology has played a big role. They have become the quintessential "microwave" generation. They want it NOW. They want it ALL. And they don't want it to cost THEM anything. Recipe for disaster.

Regardless of your opinion of Vick, he appears to be a completely transformed man. I can't say the same about Marcus. I am offering $1000 to anyone who takes out Cooper. Really, with what Michael's money, Marcus?

Vick deserves respect?

Well he has to earn it. We don't see what happens behind the scenes, of course, but it sure APPEARS like he's earned it. Veteran QB with 10+ years experience who's worked his ass off and got the starting job to lead his team. And learned an entirely new offensive system in doing so. We'll see how he plays but I certainly think he deserves it from his teammates.

Very few starting NFL QB's don't deserve respect. The job requires they know EVERYTHING and then some. Arrogant whiny little snots like Williams need to STFU and earn their stripes. If the head coach doesn't have the stones, then the vets on that team need to take care of him and get the message across.

The guy has been in the league for 13 years and has 2 playoff wins and 1 felony arrest. Prove it on the field and you'll get respect Vick.

In honor of GTC, I will insert racism into the equation. Why are black athletes always complaining instead of proving it on the field. See Alan Iverson!
