[h=1]Confirmed: ‘Breaking Bad’ spinoff ‘Better Call Saul’ is happening[/h]Oh. My. God. Deadline is reporting that the “Breaking Bad” spinoff “Better Call Saul,” which had been rumored for months, is confirmed to be moving forward on AMC.
But, like all things “Breaking Bad,” there’s a catch: Bob Odenkirk isn’t necessarily 100% confirmed yet.
Deadline reports that AMC (distributor) and Sony (the “Breaking Bad” producer) have reached a “licensing agreement” for “Better Call Saul” and that a Season One has an order “pending the complication of Sony TV’s deals with Gilligan, Gould and Odenkirk.”
A “Better Call Saul” without Gilligan and Odenkirk involved would be unthinkable (and unwatchable, on principle alone). So we’re just going to go ahead and assume that they’ll work out their differences and get on with this thing. For his part Gilligan has been saying for a year that he loves the idea.
“I would love to see a Saul Goodman spinoff,” he said in 2012. “I like the idea of a lawyer show in which the main lawyer will do anything it takes to stay out of a court of law. He’ll settle on the courthouse steps, whatever it takes to stay out of the courtroom. That would be fun — I would like that.”
Odenkirk’s portrayal of the completely corrupted lawyer has got to be one of the most compelling characters on TV. “Better Call Saul” is being planned as a prequel, which ostensibly answer the question, “How did Saul end up here?”
Even though everyone is skeptical of spinoffs, this thing sounds incredible. In the meantime, watch a few minutes of Bob Odenkirk yelling on “Mr. Show,” here.
