Baseball rule question: Why didn't Mariano Rivera get the save last night but the win?

For anyone that watched the game I'm not sure how this doesn't count as a save. I really don't care either way other than I'm curious, but anyone explain it better?

Yankees leading 5-2 going into the bottom of the 8th. David Robertson gives up 3 runs but finishes the inning so the score is tied 5-5 going into the top of the 9th. Yankees take the lead 6-5, Mo Rivera comes into the game with the lead, gets 3 outs but isn't credited with the save but the win? Seems odd to me, this blurb to me is from ESPN.

"Mariano Rivera (6-2) got three straight outs in the bottom half and was given credit for the win by the official scorer because Robertson was ineffective in the eighth."

interesting

I think official scorer ultimately has the final say in if a pitcher gets a win, within the standard rules. I think I saw it once before in some marathon near 20 inning affair and the scorer gave it to a guy that went 8 scoreless innings in the middle of the game but left right before his team got the run to win

This is shocking to me as I had no clue. So if this would have been a record breaking save for MO could they have given him the save? Seems ridiculous a scorer can make a judgement call in this regard. I have seen thousands of times a pitcher get a win that didn't deserve one.

Hmmm, is it as simple as saying "someone had to get the win"?

Obviously, the starting pitcher couldn't get the win since his lead was relinquished when David Robertson gave up 3 runs. Robertson couldn't get the win since he didn't leave with the lead. Therefore, who else would get the W besides Rivera???

Maybe I'm inking of it too simply.

I think Robertson would normally get the win here but they gave it to Mo as a judgement call

I think Rivera would rather the save, but he can't get both.

usually a closer gets a win by blowing the save.

it might be the rule, and Robertson certainly doesn't deserve the win, but I've never seen it invoked before.

dude just didn't want ESPN to be talking about Mo's 150th save against the O's :)

(or is it 200?)

I would think that ruling would be more condusive to enforce if the starting pitcher failed to go five innings (deciding on what relief pitcher to reward a victory to), but this is clearly a case where the game became tied after the starting pitcher left , so yes, jackass move on this official scorer.
