Got an estimate today for 4 rooms downstairs and stair case (17 steps), pulling out carpet and installing bamboo flooring, house less than 5 years old, approximately 1000 square feet. Estimated cost $12,500. I have no experience with this, but the price seemed pretty jacked up. The cost of the flooring was on sale for about $4.19/sq ft.

I may be wrong but I wouldn't think the labor would cost more than the material. Just a guess cause I have no idea, my house isn't nice enough to put $12k floors in

Get another estimate, or two. A lot of times when a contractor does't want the job they will bid it high.

Not sure what city you're in but in Denver, the pricing model we write show $6.64/sf for very good grade bamboo flooring. $3.56 material, $3.08 labor. 3 foot steps $22.44/each. Good underlayment (if needed) $0.68/sf $0.41/material, $.27/labor, vapor barrier $.28/sf (usually in humid climates or in baths, kitchens). Prep floor by sand and scrape $1.50/sf. Tear out carpet $.19/sf, tear out pad $.09/sf, remove tack strip $.40/lf. Probably a few transition strips around doors $3.32/lf. Maybe a dump fee for the carpet ($200 at the most). Some taxes on the material. Maybe some quarter round, may need to detach and reset the base. May be some contents manipulation. It's probably pretty close. Did you ask him to break it down?

Yeah, I have a break down. $7367.70 for materials, $5133.48 for labor. Includes $225 delivery charge, all kinds of self leveler, urethanes, $1200 for Bostic Seal and grip? I have no idea what half this shit is, I just know that theres a lot of it.

Have 2 dogs and 2 kids, wanted something hard/durable.

Then you should avoid bamboo.

Easily dented and scratched and can't be refinished easily

Not good for humid climates.
These are just my experiences

Yeah dude bostik is pretty expensive - it's a vapor barrier that you paint on. The guy you have is probably trying to appeal to the custom home guy that wants everything top of the line. Get what you pay for type of thing. He's probably overdoing it yes, but some people expect that.

Last time I bought at Home Depot with a 10% off coupon - the Armstrong planks. Had a year to pay it off. Got like 3 Mexicans to do this in one day for 200. I asked for 1 Mexican.
So had about 600 square foot installed in one day 200 out of pocket.

Got the kitchen and bathrooms tiles next same deal (bigger tiles too from
Lowes) maybe 400 square feet total. Got an out if work guy paid 300 cash. Took this guy 3 days so I gave him 20 extra bucks for gas in his Lincoln (black guy).

Are there any Amish communities within 50 miles of where you live? That might be another option that could save you thousands.
