Time to revisit Kapernick vs Alex Smith?

Monster game for Kaep in week 1, but...

Week 2:
13/28 for 127 yards, 0 TD 3 INT, 20 yards rushing

Granted that was on the road against Seattle, but now at home against a weak defense he has completed 8 passes for 86 yards and only has 17 yards rushing? (Still 3 minutes left in the game)

Alex Smith completing 61% of his passes for 6 TD, hasn't thrown a pick yet, and has rushed for 114 yards himself. His team is 3-0 while Kap's is 1-2.

Anyone else think maybe Kaepernick was crowned a little prematurely?

I thought that back then. I wasn't on this forum but I told EVERYONE I knew that Harbaugh was an IDIOT for not letting Alex Smith QB again after he was well. Where is his option QB now? Missing wide open receivers and then getting strung out wide and face planted for a loss when running! Ha ha! I hope they have a losing record. Harbaugh deserves it for being such a douche!

I didn't think it was all THAT cut and dry one way or the other. I could see an argument either way. I just didn't understand those who thought CK was the clear and obvious choice. This kid looks special sometimes and sometimes he just looks flat out awful.

We'll see how it plays out but I think time will tell that SF would have been better off sticking with Smith.

Good for the Chiefs though, looks like they have a shot to be a factor again.

He's one guy though, in the end. He's not a #1 WR (~900yds/4 TDs last season) and can't beat anyone with speed.

QB lost his top 2 targets - it's going to take some time to work shit out, and affords defenses the chance to spy on Kaepernick more in the meantime.

That's a decent argument but personally, I think Kaep is WAY over rated. Just my opinion. I give him 3 or 4 years tops and he will be a backup. He certainly has talent, but I don't think he has HALF the decision making abilities of say Luck or Russell Wilson. Literally, he's not even half as smart as those guys. MORE talented in numerous ways, but NOT with his brain.

Time will tell. BTW, it's not a 49'er thing for me either. I could care less whether they win or lose. I just don't see this guy being a top tier QB ever. Not even close.

Oh, we're in agreement that he's overrated - no doubt. I just think the last two games are failures for the entire team.

You guys do realize that all designed QB runs have been taken out of the offense? Harbaugh is making sure his QB doesn't accumulate damage. Later in the year and come playoff time this offense is going to be dangerous again, but for now one of the top things the offense does is phased out. Everyone else on the team is injured which doesn't help either.

If he goes down the season is over. 3 games into the season is far too early to panic.

San Francisco backup quarterbacks are terrible.

I argued this about 6 months ago and was called an idiot. I argued A Smith was given a raw deal and was performing as a solid QB, good leader and great game manager before he got hurt. The resident RX QB experts called me foolish.

I don't believe I called you that as I tend to agree...not so much that A Smith got a raw deal but more so that it was a little early to anoint CK. I can understand the decision in that CK seems to have a bit more upside. Glad Smith got a starting gig and is doing well with it, he's in a good place now. We'll see how CK works out.

Smith is solid and should have the Chiefs at .500 or better which is an accomplishment, but how many game managers win the Super Bowl? That's the ultimate goal and San Francisco saw a potential superstar in Kaepernick... and he is going to be a superstar in the playoffs again when he's able to bolt on designed runs.

People need to realize the 49ers offense is held back quite a bit right now because Harbaugh doesn't want him running unless absolutely necessary. Look at RG3 last year or Vick or any of the running quarterbacks... they just don't last. Kaepernick has a nice arm and can be successful without running but right now, this week especially, all of his passing weapons are gone.

What really killed the 49ers this week was Harbaugh's inability to utilize Gore who was tearing apart the Colts' weak defense. He kept dialing up pass after pass because the Colts started to key on the run, but it turned out to be the wrong move since no one on the 49ers could create separation at the receiver spots. Boldin is excellent but he makes plays with his hands and not his separation, and without Vernon Davis to draw off double coverage he's not nearly as effective.

The 49ers are just fine and will win plenty of games and are the odds on choice to win the Super Bowl this season in my opinion. Their defense plays better with the lead and that hasn't been there the last few weeks with the offense a bit handcuffed because of injuries and inability to utilize Kaep's best assets.

Smith is a solid quarterback but he's a game manager and outside of Trent Dilfer one season those guys rarely do much in the playoffs.

Brad Johnson with Tampa was another one:
If you manage to build that kind of defense like the Ravens had (or in case of Johnson, the Bucs), you're usually in pretty good shape if you just don't turn it over and let your defense/special teams win games for you. Just play for field position, might be boring, but it can work out just fine.
Smith had a 104 QB-Rating in his final year @SF: That might not be saying too much and he probably wouldn't be your first choice if you were in need of your QB staging a comeback for you because you're down, but at the same time the QB-R has some merits and (like the 49ers record with Smith under center last year) it shows you, that you can be successful with that kind of QB play. How often do people complain that gunslinging QBs forcing throws, that end up as INTs, cost them the game or even season?
You give up some explosiveness, maybe even lots of it, but at the same time you might gain on your turnover ration, average field position during the game and thereby taking pressure from your defense and putting your team in a better spot to win.
