Will the Yankees break the bank to keep Robinson Cano in pinstripes?

Robinson Cano asked for a $300 million deal from the New York Yankees "several months ago," trying to top Alex Rodriguez’s record $275 million deal, sources confirm to Ken Rosenthal.

“Out of respect to both parties, we have agreed all along with the Yankees not to comment publicly on discussions regarding Robinson’s contractual future," Brodie Van Wagenen, Cano's agent at CAA, said." I am abiding by that agreement and I will not confirm any discussions or offers or whether there have been offers by either side. As Robinson said (Wednesday), he hasn’t made any decisions on his future. Robinson is among the elite talents in the game and in the final few days of his contract, but he and I will continue to respect the process and our promise to not discuss specifics.”

Cano, who is in the final year of his deal, switched agents this year, opting to leave Scott Boras and be represented by Jay-Z’s firm Roc Nation.

The Yankees’ initial offer before the season is believed to be similar to David Wright’s contract (eight years, $138 million).

Cano is batting .315 with 27 homers and 106 RBI this season, leading the team in all three categories.

The Yankess would really have to be stupid to hand out that kind of contract after seeing what happened with A-Fraud and Pujols....... you got to think that at some point teams will learn not to give these kind of huge long term albatross contract to players on the wrong side of 30.

No way hes worth it...One of the top players but come on. Only a handful of teams could afford him, I love baseball but they have to do something with the salary cap issues foreal

Teams need to stop handing out these contracts plain and simple. Every new star wants to top the old stars big contract, when does it end? It's just like fuel prices. Remember when gas was $1 a gallon, then went to $2 and everyone freaked out? Then it went to $3, and everybody would have been happy if it went back to $2? You keep raising these contracts and the players will continue to be in control. How about this, knock these contracts down to a more reasonable amount and guess what? The players will still play ball! Then we can lower ticket prices, food prices, etc and allow more people to enjoy it! This trend we are on makes me sick. No way Cano is worth that, NO BASEBALL player is worth that and if the Yankees pay it, which I'm sure they will pay close to it then they will only continue to repeat their long list of over paying for older players mistakes.

almost impossible to be a Yankees fan anymore. Been one all my life but now I am cheering for the A's, Royals, Marlins and Rays. Not the Yankees and Angles.

Go A's!

He won't even get $200M.

No player should get more than a 5 year deal. Just bad business to do so.

He's way too old for that kind of contract.

I don't understand why mlb teams continue to make that mistake. Players decline quickly after 35 yet we have this contracts (see arod, Joey Votto, etc) that take players into their 40's making 25mil

I agree, one of the stupider things that still continue to do.

I actually think that's what he will get minimum. Someone will easily pay him that, probably a tad more.

Not saything it's smart but it will happen.

I think he gets 6 years and $140.

He isn't a true power hitter who benefits from playing at NYY. He is 31 and will be 32 soon. Thanks to Arod, Josh and Albert, the likelihood of Cano getting a monster deal is diminishing quickly. Also, he isn't a power hitter that those 3 are.

He should have never fired Boras. Boras would have leveraged another player to get Cano to a team. CAA won't get him as good a deal.

Robinson Cano is a greedy Fucker....

[h=1]Cano asks for $300 million contract from Yankees[/h] September 26, 2013 9:38 am ET

Cano is telling friends he wants to stay, but the Yankees may not be willing to meet his $300M demands. (USATSI)

Star second baseman Robinson Cano asked the Yankees for a record $300 million contract in negotiations within the past couple of weeks, and with the Yankees not offering in that ballpark, the sides understand he will test the free-agent market.
Cano's request is said to cover 10 years, meaning he's seeking to become baseball's first $30-million-a-year player. Sources confirm the request was for $300 million, or slightly over that amount.
Cano, a five-time All-Star, was believed all along to be seeking a deal in the range of Alex Rodriguez's record $275 million deal, so it isn't necessarily a major surprise he would seek that figure. Rodriguez was looking for something in that range before signing the deal with the Yankees after the 2007 season following his decision to opt out of a 10-year, $252 million contract.
Cano is in good position as the top free agent in a market flush with cash. However, it isn't known whether any team would pay in that range.
The Dodgers, the top candidate to spend, would like to lock up star pitcher Clayton Kershaw. The Cubs like Cano very much but see themselves as a year away from contention and are reluctant to give a very long contract to a player over 30. Cano, who finished in the top six in MVP voting the past three years and may do so again after another productive season this year (.315, 27 home runs, 106 RBI), is 30 and will turn 31 next month.
The Yankees have said they do not want to repeat a contract of Rodriguez's size. They obviously now view Rodriguez's contract as an error, though his career path took its own turn with the steroid revelations and two hip surgeries. Cano is healthy and has never been linked to anything untoward.
Word has been the Yankees made a "substantial" offer, but it apparently isn't close enough to keep negotiating.
Earlier the Yankees were believed to be trying to use David Wright's $138-million deal as a comp, though now that Cano is aabout to be a free agent, the equation changes a bit. The Yankees are believed willing to go higher than that considering the need to keep Cano.
The Red Sox also gave Dustin Pedroia a $100-million, even-year extension, but Pedroia but Pedoria wasn't a free agent, either. Other possible comps may include Mark Teixeira ($180 million, eight years) and Prince Fielder ($214 million, nine years).
Free agency has seemed like a likelihood for months, as was reported here in June.
Cano's agent, Brodie Van Wagenen said, "Out of respect for both parties, we have agreed all along with the Yankees not to comment publicly on discussions regarding Robinson's contractual future and I will not comment any further whether there have been offers by either side. As Robinson said yesterday he hasn't made any decisions on his future. Robinson is among the elite talents in the game and in the final few days of his contract, but he and I will continue to respect the process and our promise not to discuss specifics."
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman also said he is not commenting.
The Yankees' first offer, made in spring training, is thought to have been for about $140 million over seven years. But they raised their bid in a recent session, presumably at about the same time Cano's camp made its request.
Cano told some friends he would prefer to stay with the Yankees sometime in the past year. "He'll be a Yankee," one former teammate predicted a few months ago.
However, it may be a long road of negotiations before anything is settled.
ESPN first reported the request was for $305 million.

If he wants 30 million a year then make it a 4 year deal. Yanks not really in a position to pay this and stay under their 189 million target in 2014. Even with A-Roid's salary axed for next year (?) they still have 50 million or so of dead money burned on CC, Tex and Jeter.

No way is Cano worth that kind of money. I've never seen a guy with less hustle than he has. He never plays hard or runs out ground balls. he did have a great contract year, though !

The team would do way better hiring some quality players at 8-12 million a season to fill multiple holes like catcher, SS, 3B, starting pitchers and now 2B. there is no room for another 20 million + guy. At least give me a guy that plays hard and hustles for that kind of money.

Cano is batting .315 with 27 homers and 106 RBI this season, leading the team in all three categories.

Miguel Cabrera is batting 345 with 44 homers and 137 RBI.

How much should Cabrera ask for 400 million ?
