I'm terrible at it and don't enjoy it. I just want to walk in offer a price and say take it or leave it. That strategy doesn't work seem to work very well. Anybody have any tips for me?

1) Be prepared to walk
2) Do your homework
3) Always mention you are looking at other options (cars)
4) Do the math yourself, say for example the payment type (if you are not a cash buyer) is $450 per month for 36 months. Get them to come down to $400, but they will balk at that, tell them $425 or you walking. You are saving $900 on the car, but tell them it is only $25 per month to them.

some dealerships are better about it than others... ask around...

Carmax if your buying a used car maybe the way to go for you

Most dealerships around me have taking the negotiations out of it. Most have taking the Saturn approach and the price on the window is the price.

I tied up my salesman from 11am to 7. Then close to closing time, I told him I was going to another dealer. He was not going to make any money becuz I just bout drove every new car on the lot & he stayed with me all day. Then he asked me not to leave @ went back to his boss & I got the deal I wanted. I also went out to the lot & asked people what they got off their sticker price. Also, there r special days where they have sales with 0% interest. This was Thanksgiving weekend & that saved me a lot of money.

I went to look at a Kia Optima today. Sticker was $25k. Internet price had $21,260, in fine print that I did not read there were some discounts for being a student, military included in that $21,260 price......I asked for their best offer they said $25 something out the door including tt&l. I said I wasn't even going to make a counter offer, they insisted so I told them $19k out the door. Eventually they gave me the price of $22,2 out the door and that seemed as low as they were going to go for today at least. I told them ill think about it and left. They tried to get me to take the car, I declined with the excuse that I tote around a car seat.....I guess I'm going to let them sit on that number for a few days and see if they come up with some new discounts or may even try my luck at a different dealership

if you pretend you are mentally disabled or handicap, they will try and give you the best deal they can.

only bad thing is the lightning bolt that god will send directed at you as you drive off the lot

Kind of in the same line as what gijoe said, I go on the busiest day (Saturday, summer, big sale going on) and I ask to see the car I want first, then say I can't afford it and ask them to show me something else cheaper. Then I keep talking about the first car and keep having them show me other cars, driving around, etc. I plan on staying until they close unless they give me number I want, which I find by doing some homework on that particular vehicle. Sometimes it works the first time, sometimes I do that 4 times before buying.

A little research will get you the BEST price if you are silly enough to buy new.

Make dealerships bid to give you their best price.

i have heard people do internet research to find the exact price they want....print it out and show it to dealer.....and they don't care if they get it or not but if not they walk

if it is a price the dealership will go to then i assume it saves time

Make sure u negotiate out the door price.. they wil continue to throw a dozen other fake taxes. Fake preporations... extra bonus offers.. sooo be prepared to walk and keep useing the phrase OUT THE DOOR PRICE. Good luk..

3 months ago I bot a 2 yr old prius for my fiance. Sticker was 26.. I got it for 24 out the door taxes and everything... blah blah.. it ended up being a 4g discount. My fica was 720 so I aalso got a 2.9 interest.. anyway.. the car biz is a tricky bait and switch.. good luck..

Unless you're a mechanic yourself and understand cars and car values, salesmen won't help you.

Simplest solution. Pay the car salesman $250 Cash. He will get you his best deal. That is better than the extra $100, he is going to make for trying to rip you off. So, he will make his cut, save you $1500 and he will make his commission and $250 additional.

You're on dangerous grounds Spicoli. He's more likely to take your money, sell you a piece of crap anyways and pocket his measley $100 on top of your $250. Go get drunk after work, get a cheap hooker, take her to the hourly No-Tell Motel, and still have enough left over to buy peanuts as dinner for the wife and kids when he gets home.
