Lions beat Bears, sit atop of NFC North by NBC25 Newsroom

DETROIT (AP) -- By Lage Lage, AP Sports Writer
The return of Reggie Bush more than made up for the loss of Nate Burleson.
Bush's 37-yard touchdown run helped Detroit score 27 points in the second quarter and he accounted for 173 yards of offense to help the Lions beat the Chicago Bears 40-32 on Sunday.
Detroit (3-1) moved into a first-place tie with Chicago (3-1) in the NFC North. The Lions scored 24 straight points, including three TDs in a span of 3 minutes, 26 seconds, after Matt Forte's 53-yard TD run gave the Bears 10-6 lead early in the second quarter.
Jay Cutler, who had four turnovers, threw a pair of touchdown passes and 2-point conversions in the final 4 minutes to pull Chicago within eight points to make the score look respectable.
Lions receiver Kris Durham recovered the onside kick to seal the win.
Detroit had a huge cushion to work with thanks to positive plays it got from each facet of the game.
Micheal Spurlock's 57-yard punt return set up Matthew Stafford's go-ahead TD with 6:09 left in the first half, when he recovered his own fumble on a 1-yard sneak. Stafford threw a 2-yard TD to Calvin Johnson on the Lions' next possession, one play after safety Glover Quin returned Jay Cutler's second interception for 42 yards.
Bush burst through a huge hole and hurdled safety Major Wright to give the Lions a 30-10 lead, their highest scoring first half in franchise history against Chicago, showing they didn't miss Burleson very much. Burleson, the team's No. 2 receiver, broke his left arm in a one-car accident last Tuesday.
After missing a game with a banged-up left knee, the speedy running back looked very healthy. Bush had a season-high 139 yards rushing and a score on 18 carries, taking advantage of running lanes against a line without defensive tackle Henry Melton. He also had four receptions for 34 yards.
Stafford completed 23 of 35 passes for 242 yards with a TD, an interception and a lost fumble.
His fumble put Chicago in a position to kick a field goal to make it 30-13 at halftime. The Bears kicked another field goal midway through the third quarter to pull within two TDs.
Cutler hurt the Bears opportunity to come back when his up-for-grabs pass was picked off by safety Louis Delmas, who had two interceptions for the first time in his five-year career.
Stafford, though, turned the ball over again to give Chicago a chance _ briefly. His low pass intended for Johnson inside the Bears 10 was kicked up in the air and intercepted by Wright.
Three snaps later, Ndamukong Suh sacked Cutler for a second time and forced a fumble that fellow defensive tackle Nick Fairley recovered and returned 4 yards for a score that put Detroit up 37-16 late in the third.
Cutler entered the game with a 7-1 record with the Bears against the Lions in large part because he had thrown only one interception.
He tripled that total in one afternoon, fumbled for a fourth turnover and was sacked three times after being sacked that many times combined in three games this season.
Cutler was 27 of 47 for 317 yards with a 14-yard TD pass to Alshon Jeffery with 4 minutes left and a 2-yard conversion pass to the same receiver that pulled Chicago within 16 points.

We have seen this act before....can the Lions keep it up?

I say the Bears return the favor in Chicago and that the Bears still win the division...

[h=1]NFL scout: Lions 'easy choice' to win NFC North[/h]

Tom Pelissero, USA TODAY Sports 12:56 p.m. EST November 8, 2013Who will rise out of the three-way tie atop the NFC North standings – a race muddled when the Green Bay Packers lost quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a broken collarbone Monday night?

A high-ranking scout for another NFL team, speaking on condition of anonymity for competitive reasons, said the Detroit Lions are "the easy choice" at this point. Here's why:

For at least the next few weeks, the Packers are planning to turn over their fate to quarterback Seneca Wallace, a career backup who is 33 years old, has a 5-16 record as a starter and was out of football last season. They're also down receiver Randall Cobb (leg) and tight end Jermichael Finley (neck). "I guess the good thing is they have some sort of a run game now," the scout said. "But they've gone from one of the best offenses in the league to pretty average really quick. You always wondered how they'd be without a top-five quarterback, and I guess now we're going to find out. They've got three winnable games (against Philadelphia, the New York Giants and Minnesota). But it's not going to be easy. You don't have that pressure that they're going to score every time they get the ball. That puts a stress on you and it changes the way you call a game."

The Chicago Bears will get quarterback Jay Cutler back from a torn groin Sunday against the Lions and have a talented, balanced offense. But "I don't know if their defense can hold up vs. a good offense," the scout said. "Once Rodgers went out (Monday night), they hung it together. They did regroup, but Green Bay was one-dimensional, so (the Bears) could stop the run, but they were getting gassed. They're playing hard. They have no d-tackles and they're young at linebacker right now. Their safeties aren't very good. The corners – they're good players, aging. Haven't got much out of (Julius) Peppers."
Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford (2,617 yards, 16 touchdowns, 94.8 quarterback rating) is playing the best football of his career, perhaps in part because running back Reggie Bush's arrival is forcing defenses to respect the perimeter running threat as well as the underneath space in the passing game created by All-Pro receiver Calvin Johnson. Detroit has shored up some defensive issues, too. "You used to be able to just put a safety over Calvin and he'd still make plays, but at least you weren't worried about the other guys," the scout said. "(Stafford's) not making the big mistakes like he used to. He's got all the arm talent in the world. He's still a little bit of a slinger – he's just grown up. (Bush) gives them a different dimension. I think they're probably run-blocking a little better. They've tightened up the secondary a little bit at safety, and that was always the issue. They've always been pretty strong up front, but you still could run on them because they're undisciplined. I think you have to go with Detroit. I don't think they're a great team, but they're healthy."

Probably not. The lions much like the Falcons of previous years lack the toughness....both mentally and physically.

BYE BYE LIONS (-300 LOL)

Detroit (7-8) lost for the fifth time in six games.
Embattled Lions coach Jim Schwartz chose to play for overtime by running out the clock with 23 seconds and two timeouts left from the Detroit 25. When the crowd reacted with a chorus of boos, Schwartz turned his head toward the stands and appeared to angrily shout back at the fans.
