In a previous blog we covered the statistics behind Phil Ivey's £7.3 million Punto Banco win at London's Crockfords Casino.
In the latest development the legendary poker player and casino high roller has admitted to using a technique known as 'Edge Sorting', attesting it is legal and legitimate.
All Ivey's winnings above his initial £1m stake have been withheld by the Mayfair casino since August 2012, making front page tabloid news.
In a fresh twist 14 months on, British newspaper The Daily Mail now reports that Ivey admits to to winning by 'reading' the backs of cards. Due to manufacturing imperfections in the card cutting process, Ivey and a mysterious Chinese lady named 'Kelly' were able to spot differences in the card backs when turned 180 degrees and use this knowledge to gain an advantage over the house edge. Edge sorting is this method of re-aligning key Punto Banco cards for mathematical gain.
During the second session on August 20th various requests were made for the deck to be changed at the end of hands. Crockfords complied. Kelly identified a deck with an asymmetrical pattern on the the reverse side. Kelly would ask the dealer to reveal each card in turn by lifting an edge so that Kelly could identify whether the card was a 7, 8, or 9. The first time that Kelly identified a key card, she told the dealer that it was a 'good card' which she wanted the dealer to rotate in the opposite direction to all the other cards. Again Crocksfords complied. In this way, key Punto Banco cards were orientated in the opposite direction to the rest of the deck. - Ivey Statement
Casinos often agree to unusual requests and superstitions to encourage whales to continue gambling. Yet after the fact Crockfords is now claiming Ivey 'operated a scam'. They also only identified Kelly as winning over $1 million from U.S. casinos with her edge sorting expertise - being barred and having all monies withheld - after the event and issuing a winnings receipt.
In a similar case New York Baccarat players Leonard Hu and Leonard Hu were acquitted of cheating by a judge ruling that state law 'prohibits anyone from knowingly marking cards but does not clearly prohibit someone from participating in a game with marked cards'. Ivey's reference to himself an 'advantage player' who uses 'legal ways to gain a mathematical advantage' over casinos indicates he is confident that his team of lawyers will also win their ongoing law suit vs Crockfords.
