I played it before when I was a kid in New England. I also played "duckpin" which are shorter and fatter pins. Candle pin are just slim sticks. Personally I liked duckpin better. It was fun to do in the winter though. It's old school. I'm sure there are VERY few places that still offer either of them.

It's awful. Tons of spots that have it around Boston... You get 3 balls, the pins aren't removed between balls, and, well... Yeah, it sucks. It's everything awful about bowling and skee - ball, combined.

Duck pin bowling used to be huge in New England but most of the old places closed down. I used to go to my dads Monday night league when I was a kid. I liked it a lot better when I was young as the balls are a lot smaller. You can rip those things down the lane.

i didnt mind playing candlepin when i was growing up. never played duckpin till i moved to costa rica. used to go to the weymouth bowling ally, which is now a commuter rail stop, or o'lindys in quincy.

you get 3 balls instead of 2, and the wood will lay where it falls, so you could use it to your advantage to get a spare. balls are much smaller.

YES! Olindys rules!!! Have been to both but not in a decade or 3. Did many alleys around Boston area and there is no better feeling than making the wood fly with a well aimed strike! All that noise and suddenly nothing standing, pretty ballsy stuff. Why is duckpin mentioned in the same breath here? Candlepin rules in New Engleand and all else is a distant second... or at least that's how it used to be. Ten pin shit is bbbboooorrrriiing... keep it dead center and slow and all pins go down, no challenge althougt I've never done a perfecta or clase but like very high score the very first time I ever attempted 10 pin... all marks, 1 nine I believe. Candlepin far more challenging as a 100 score is very good where it is terrible in 10 piin.
Pete I would love to give you Tres Borrachos as a longshot on Breeders Cup next week at Santa Anita but I don't think he is entering any races this year.
FWIW - recently went on a long bike ride on SoShore and got a flat shortly after exiting that said "T" stop ... not a fun afternoon

I never knew this to be only a New England thing. I grew up playing candlepin, almost never played ten pin. Its good when your a kid cause of the ball size. Its a popular birthday party event now a days. They block the gutters so kids can keep the ball in the alley.

Chop is wrong it not so difficult to get a strike in candlepin. It doesn't happen as often as ten pin, but I would be disappointed playing a game without a strike.

Most alleys in Massachusetts/Maine offer both types.
