Seriously no improvement at all. Something like a 1977 Corolla matches about anything you can buy now, except a too expensive Hybrid.

I can't buy a 4cyl new truck today that doesn't get worse mileage than one from the 80's.

A honda civic from 1980 is no worse than a new one today for mileage.

What up wit dat ?

You're out of your mind. The Ford Fusion gets 37 mpg on regular gas. Nice car by the way!

Are you nuts? 1990's sedans get 15 mpg and 25 on the highway.

Fuel economy is up only slightly because the horsepower, weight and emissions controls has been increased.

1977 Honda Civic: 1500 lbs, 50 hp
2013 Honda Civic: 2700 lbs, 140 hp

Yup. Because of his internet invention, I drive a lot less now than I used to 10 years ago. I can do literally everything from banking, trading, shopping,...etc on my cellphone/laptop.

Thank you very much Mr. Al Gore.

Actually a 1998 Corolla got about 2 mpg's less than a 2013 model. So it has gotten a lil better. Many reasons y its not a lot better and most all of them have to do with Govt regulations.
Emission standards are more important now than gas mileage to regulators hence that is what they concentrate on. Also the idiots set CAFE standards by the entire model line not just 1 car....So they can make an SUV that gets 9 mpg by also making a go-kart that gets 45mpg.
We will see the same thing in health care in the future. You can let 60 yr olds with cancer die by coming up with a way to cut obesity in 6 year olds. Cut kidney failures by 5% and you can have autism go up 20%. It will all balance itself out. Isnt Govt regulation a wonderful thing?....They know so much more than us peasants about what is good for us. We should thank God for Govt regulation ........as soon as the regulators decide which God is the right 1 for the common good.

I personally think if you want to own one of these big ass gas guzzlers you should pay a big ass luxury tax to do so.

not sure how thats possible when it was 99 cents/gal in 1985.

Easily possible...I started driving in 94, grad in 96. It was $.79 a gallon here. I live in the County with the cheapest gas in the entire nation now. It is $2.99 here today for reg 87 octane.

Gas most certainly was under $1 a gallon circa 1998 matching the 1985 price.

Silver was $50 in 1980 and is about $22 now.

Commodities are volatile, not everything increases at a nice steady rate, look at real estate.

Electronics are something else that keeps getting cheaper and better.
