Ball State at Northern Illinois: What bettors need to know

Ball State Cardinals at Northern Illinois Huskies (-7, 72)

To this point, Jordan Lynch and No. 21 Northern Illinois have passed every test they’ve faced during the 2013 season. However, the Huskies will face a stern challenge – maybe their toughest of the year – against visiting Ball State on Wednesday night. Northern Illinois has defeated Iowa, Purdue and a 9-1 Eastern Illinois squad, but this matchup with the Cardinals is for first place in the Mid-American Conference’s West Division.

Ball State is 6-0 in the league following last week’s 20-point victory over Central Michigan, while Northern Illinois improved to 5-0 in MAC play with a 44-point rout of Massachusetts on Nov. 2. Since then, the Huskies have been preparing for this game, which will feature two quarterbacks with impressive stats but very different styles. “You have that 'dual-threat' label now and the 'pro-style' label,” Huskies coach Rod Carey of the contrast between Lynch and Ball State’s Keith Wenning, adding that "Wenning) is a good football player.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2. LINE: Northern Illinois -6.5

ABOUT BALL STATE (9-1, 6-0 MAC): The Cardinals’ only loss this season came at North Texas on Sept. 14, when the Mean Green erased a 20-3 deficit to stun Ball State 34-27. Since that game, the Cardinals have won seven in a row, including five wins by at least 18 points. Wenning has 27 touchdowns against only five interceptions this season, and Ball State’s two-headed rushing attack of Jahwan Edwards and Horactio Banks has combined for 1,344 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground.

ABOUT NORTHERN ILLINOIS (9-0, 5-0): The Huskies, who rank in the top 10 nationally in rushing yards per game (fourth, 312.7) and points per game (eighth, 44.2), have the nation’s longest conference winning streak – 22 straight victories against MAC opponents. The fuel to their engine is Lynch, who finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy balloting a season ago and could place even higher this year, with 1,871 passing yards and 19 touchdowns to go along with 1,150 rushing yards and 12 scores on the ground. While Northern Illinois’ offense gets most of the attention, its defense has yielded 24 points or less in six straight games, led by ball-hawking safety Jimmie Ward and his team-high five interceptions.

TRENDS:

* Road team is 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.
* Cardinals are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 conference games.
* Huskies are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall.
* Over is 10-4 in Huskies last 14 games in November.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Northern Illinois also has the nation’s longest home winning streak, having won 24 in a row at Huskie Stadium.

2. Cardinals WR Willie Snead owns the school record for receiving touchdowns in a season with 12 this year.

3. Lynch is one of nine players in FBS history to accumulate at least 3,000 rushing yards and 5,000 passing yards, a list that also includes San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who did it at Nevada from 2008-11.

Ball State plays No. 20 Northern Illinois Wednesday
by Freddy Wander

Kickoff: Wednesday, 8:00 p.m. ET
Line: Northern Illinois -6.5

Ball State and No. 20 Northern Illinois, both undefeated in the Mid-American Conference, battle it out to take control of the West division on Wednesday night.

Both the Cardinals and Huskies have had impressive seasons, and neither team has lost a game in the conference. Ball State (7-3 ATS) has lost one game on the season though, as it was defeated by North Texas by a score of 34-27. The Cardinals have beaten conference opponents by an average of 16.7 PPG over their six games, but have had close games against Toledo (31-24) and Kent State (27-24). In their most recent game, they racked up 549 yards of total offense and defeated Central Michigan 44-24. Northern Illinois (6-3 ATS) is a perfect 9-0 SU this season and has defeated conference opponents by an average of 25.0 PPG in five games. The Huskies, who rank 15th in the BCS standings, have scored more than 27 points in each one of their contests this season, and in their most recent game against UMass, scored a season-high 63 points on their way to a victory. In that win, they had 612 total yards of offense, including 354 yards on the ground. NIU is 11-5 SU and 9-6 ATS in the 16 games these two programs have played against each other since 1992. Last season when these two teams played, Northern Illinois won 35-23 on the road as 3-point favorites and used its ground game (314 yards rushing) to overcome the Cardinals, who dominated in the air (434 passing yards). NIU is 5-2 SU at home over the past seven games these two teams have played, but is only 2-4 ATS in the past six at Huskie Stadium.

Ball State has scored a hefty 39.9 PPG this season (15th in nation) and has used its air attack to accomplish much of this scoring. QB Keith Wenning ranks fourth in the nation in both passing yards (3,164) and passing touchdowns (27). Wenning has also thrown only five interceptions this season and has not tossed one since Oct. 12 against Kent State. Over his past three games, Wenning has averaged 287.7 passing YPG with 12 touchdowns. Doing most of the work on the receiving end of things has been WR Willie Snead, who is third in the nation in receiving yards (1,175) and has added 12 touchdowns (3rd in FBS). Snead has had 100+ receiving yards in six of the team’s past seven games and has totaled eight touchdowns over the past five contests. With opposing teams defending against the pass so much, the Cardinals' run game has been very effective. HBs Jahwan Edwards and Horactio Banks have combined for 1,344 yards on 240 attempts (5.6 YPC) with 19 touchdowns. Banks had his best game of the season against Central Michigan this past week, running for 143 yards on just 11 carries (13.0 YPC) and scored a touchdown. CB Jeffery Garrett (41 tackles, 5 INT) has an interception in four of the team’s past five games and has helped the Cardinals hold opponents to 22.9 PPG during Ball State’s current seven-game winning streak.

The Huskies currently rank eighth in the nation in scoring (44.2 PPG) and rank fourth in the nation in rushing offense (312.7 YPG). NIU has used QB Jordan Lynch effectively both in the passing game and the rushing attack. Through the air, Lynch has 1,871 yards with 19 touchdowns and five interceptions, which includes 383 yards, 5 TD and 0 INT over the team’s past two games. Where Lynch really shines is running the ball where he now has 1,150 rushing yards (7th in nation) on 173 attempts (6.6 YPC) with 12 touchdowns. He has averaged 178 yards on the ground with 8 TD over his past three games, including gaining 316 yards on the ground and scoring three touchdowns against Central Michigan on Oct. 19. Aiding Lynch in the running game is HB Cameron Stingily (784 rush yards, 8 TD) who has scored a rushing touchdown in six of the past seven games he has played. WR Tommylee Lewis has caught the ball 63 times this season but for only 552 yards (8.9 avg.) and three touchdowns. The Huskies red-zone threat through the air has been WR Da’Ron Brown who has 480 receiving yards on 33 catches (14.5 avg.) and has a team-high seven touchdown receptions. The NIU defense has held opposing teams to 25.0 PPG this season and has lowered that number to just 20.0 PPG in conference play.

Jordan's defensive play helping Clippers cover spreads

The defensive play of L.A. Clippers center DeAndre Jordan has helped the Clippers cover five of seven games so far this season. Jordan is averaging 11 points, 13.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game.

Coach Doc Rivers has made defense a priority for the sixth-year center this year. As a result, he's seeing a bigger role and three of the last four Clippers games have played under the total.

Flyers have struggled in back-to-back games this season

The Philadelphia Flyers face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday on zero days of rest after facing the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

The Flyers are just 1-2 this season on no rest and have just four goals combined in those games. They opened as big +200 underdogs on the overnight line for Wednesday before lacing up against Ottawa.

WINNING POINTS

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
*Georgetown over Wright State by 6
Is there such a thing as a “Seoul, Korea Hangover?” That’s where G-Town played on
Friday night. Anyone know how many days it takes for athletes to recover? Former
Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina once blamed a half-season of poor performances on
going having played in Japan at the end of March.
GEORGETOWN, 56-50.

**PREFERRED
Seton Hall* over Kent State by 21
Until kids start breaking down physically, which almost always happens at Seton Hall,
the Pirates should impress, especially in home games vs. smaller sides like Kent State.
A full roster of players who deserve court time gives young Willard the opportunity to
press and play fast for 40 minutes.
SETON HALL, 79-59.

Central Florida* over Florida State by 1
Michael Snaer is gone for the Seminoles, and their most promising recruit, Xavier
Rathan-Mayes, is academically ineligible. UCF tends to shamelessly pull out the hose
and turn it on full blast when playing in non-conference home games.
CENTRAL FLORIDA, 60-59.

Illinois* over Valparaiso by 3
Far from a gimme for Illinois. They have only 11 guys, and seven of them are guards.
The typical Big Ten team is a lot more physical than they are, which means that Valpo
should be able to hang in there despite some heavy turnover on their roster.
ILLINOIS, 66-63.

*Providence over Brown by 9

DePaul* over Southern Miss by 4

Colorado* over Wyoming by 2
The host Buffs are young, lacking a knockdown outside shooter and a proven scorer
among the bigs. Wyoming was good enough to start 13-0 SU last season, and coach
Shyatt says, “I don’t want to read this stuff about rebuilding. This thing’s been rebuilt.”
COLORADO, 61-59.

Oregon State* over Portland by 8

San Francisco* over Cleveland State by 8

Cal-Riverside* over Pepperdine by 1

WINNNING POINTS

PRO BASKETBALL
*Orlando over Milwaukee by 1
The Bucks need to win this matchup as it's sandwiched between games against Miami
and Indiana. Orlando entered the first weekend of this month, though, 3-0 ATS
despite being without Tobias Harris, who led them in scoring last season, and draw
Milwaukee playing for the second consecutive night.
ORLANDO 93-92.

**PREFERRED
*Philadelphia over Houston by 4
The Rockets have to guard against a look-ahead as they meet the Knicks at Madison
Square Garden the next night on national television. The Rockets were 4-13-1 ATS
versus a foe with a losing home record.
PHILADELPHIA 107-103.

*Boston over Charlotte by 4
The Bobcats last played on the road eight days ago. They enter this matchup 5-16-1
ATS during their past 22 away matchups. Celtics undrafted center Vitor Favorani has
shown promise in the early going.
BOSTON 98-94.

*Memphis over Toronto by 10
The Grizzlies routed the Raptors by 21 at home last season. This marks Toronto's
fourth game in six days.
MEMPHIS 96-86.

*Minnesota over Cleveland by 6
After holding Kevin Durant to just 13 points, the Timberwolves certainly are capable
of holding down Kyrie Irving. A healthy Kevin Love makes Minnesota a serious playoff
contender.
MINNESOTA 100-94.

*Atlanta over New York by 3
The Hawks make a rare ESPN appearance in this matchup. Al Horford, Jeff Teague
and Paul Millsap are playing well for the Hawks, but their bench and other two starting
spots have been disappointing.
ATLANTA 102-99.

*San Antonio over Washington by 12
The Spurs have a far stronger bench and the big men to take advantage of
Washington's soft interior.
SAN ANTONIO 103-91.

*Denver over Los Angeles Lakers by 7
Both teams have struggled out of the gate. Denver beat the Lakers three of four last
season and draw Los Angeles playing for the second straight night. Aside from Pau
Gasol, the Lakers have been an inconsistent mess. Steve Nash is gimpy and can't be
counted on anymore for major minutes.
DENVER 106-98.

**PREFERRED
*Utah over New Orleans by 11
The Hornets have dropped 12 of their last 13 road contests through Nov. 5, including
getting blasted by the Magic at Orlando in their second game. Utah has one of the
better young big men tandem in Derrick Favors and Enes Kantor.
UTAH 102-91.

*Portland over Phoenix by 10
Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum and Damian Lillard give the Trail
Blazers the three best players on the court. Phoenix had failed to cover in eight of its
last 10 away matchups through Nov. 2.
PORTLAND 106-96.

Brooklyn over *Sacramento by 5
Brooklyn's veterans should be refreshed despite a cross-country trip having last played
on Saturday. The Kings need to get more scoring from their forwards and from starting
point guard Greivis Vasquez. Deron Williams should have his way against Vasquez
and backup point guard Isaiah Thomas.
BROOKLYN 106-101.

*Los Angeles Clippers over Oklahoma City by 4
The Thunder entered the first Sunday of this month having failed to cover in their last
seven games versus Western Conference foes. No point guard has been playing better
than Chris Paul.
LA CLIPPERS 105-101.
