Beyond the BCS: Capping college football's small conferences

Some of the best betting value in college football is hiding beyond the BCS, in the small conferences. Each week, Covers Experts’ Doc’s Sports will look at the little programs that could help you make big cash this college season.

Team to watch: Northern Illinois Huskies (9-0 SU, 6-3 ATS)

This week: -7 vs. Ball State

Quarterback Jordan Lynch says Wednesday’s MAC showdown against Ball State has been circled on Northern Illinois’ calendar from the start, insisting that’s where the focus remains despite the possibility of a return trip to a BCS bowl looming. Lynch leads the conference and is 11th in the entire nation with 335.7 yards of total offense per game.

The Huskies are expected to have running back Cameron Stingily (784 yards, eight touchdowns), who played sparingly last week against UMass after missing one game due to turf toe.

Northern Illinois is 5-1 ATS in its last six overall and 7-3-1 ATS in its last 11 home games.

Team to beware: South Alabama Jaguars (3-5 SU, 5-3 ATS)

This week: -9 at Navy

The Jaguars had a bye week to maximize their preparation for Saturday’s game at Navy…or to lick their wounds. All five of South Alabama’s losses this season have come by seven points or fewer, including three by one point and its last three dating back Oct. 5 by a combined four points.

Head coach Joey Jones’ team faces the added pressure of playing at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for the first time in school history in a game televised by CBS Sports Network. Jones has expressed concern over Navy’s ability to adjust its triple-option offense when opponents try to defend it with varying schemes.

A squad that traditionally struggles late in the season, South Alabama is 0-5 ATS in its last five November games and it is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 forays onto fieldturf.

Total team: UTEP Miners (1-8 SU, 4-5 O/U)

This week: 49 vs. Florida International

UTEP may be without Aaron Jones for Saturday’s home game against Florida International. Jones, who suffered a rib injury last week, had rushed 51 times for 248 yards in his two previous games. Losing Jones is not what the Miners need for their struggling offense.

Head coach Sean Kugler has been shuffling his offensive line since left guard Jerel Watkins sustained a knee injury in mid-October. No combination has worked well, with UTEP scoring a mere seven points in every one of its last three contests. FIU, meanwhile, is coming off a 48-0 loss to Middle Tennessee and the Golden Panthers are averaging fewer than seven points in their last three.

The under is 4-0 in UTEP’s last four overall and 4-1 in its last five in Conference-USA competition. The under is 5-0 in FIU’s last five overall and 5-0 in its last five conference games.

Exposing the Top 25: Where the polls went wrong

Each week throughout the college football season, Covers Expert Jesse Schule will dissect the new Top 25 rankings, looking for betting value. He'll showcase the most overrated team, along with the most underrated ranked team, and an unranked squad that he feels should be in the Top 25.

Most Underrated Top 25 Team - Baylor Bears (9-0 SU, 8-1 ATS)

I've been telling anyone who will listen, that the Bears are for real this year, and I've been saying it since Week 1. After they defeated Oklahoma by a score of 41-12 this Saturday, it leaves little doubt that Baylor is one of the best teams in the country.

Baylor leads the nation in scoring averaging 61 points per game, nine more than Florida State who ranks second. They are expected to beat Texas Tech by four touchdowns at home this Saturday, but they face a tougher challenge against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road the following week.

Most Overrated Top 25 Team - Ohio State Buckeyes (9-0 SU, 6-2-1 ATS)

You have to go back a long time since the Buckeyes last lost a football game. It looks like they have a clear path to another perfect season, but they've only played two ranked teams.

OSU has played close games against Iowa, Northwestern and Wisconsin, but for the most part they have been padding their stats against inferior opposition. They might sit above Stanford and Oregon in the AP Rankings, but if they played either of those Pac-12 powerhouses in bowl game, they'd surely have to be getting points.

Unranked team that should be ranked: BYU Cougars (6-3 SU, 5-4 ATS)

The Cougars lost to the Badgers in Wisconsin, but it was a close game (27-17). If BYU is to run the table, they will need to upset the Irish at South Bend on November 23. With an easy opponent in Idaho State this week, you can expect BYU to move back into the Top 25 next week.

College football line watch: Get Wisconsin -21 while you can

Each week during the college football season, renowned Las Vegas wiseguy and Covers Expert Bruce Marshall looks at the NCAAF odds and tells you which spread to bet now, which one to bet later, and which total to watch as the week plays out.

Indiana Hoosiers at Wisconsin Badgers (-21)

A handful of sharps were able to jump in quickly and pound the Wisconsin side from its very early -18.5 price. But we suspect this appetite for the Badgers is not going to be limited to sharp money.

Indeed, expect the public to rush the sports book windows in Las Vegas and unload on Wiscy with both fists as the week progresses. Especially when noting some recent spread trends which are illuminating as well action-inducing.

Specifically, the Badgers have won and covered the last three meetings vs. IU, but just saying “won” and “covered” don’t do those efforts justice, as the Badgers have scored a whopping 68 ppg in those feasts upon the Hoosiers.

In fact, the last time an IU team beat Wisconsin, George W. Bush was still early in his first term as president (2002). Since 2005, Wisconsin’s win margins in this series are 17, 35, 30, 35, 3 (in 2009, the Hoosiers’ lone cover vs. Wiscy since 2006), 63, 52, and 48 points!

Trends like those, and Wisconsin’s current spread prowess (8-1 vs. line this season), plus HC Gary Andersen’s recent pointspread exploits (now 19-3 vs. the line since last season with Utah State and the Badgers) suggests it will be one-way traffic at the sports books.

By the end of the week, Wisconsin’s price likely threatens the next “key” number at 24, and the current 21s could seem like a bargain.

Spread to wait on

Michigan Wolverines at Northwestern Wildcats (-3)

There was quick movement on this number that was originally posted at Michigan -1, as the sharps quickly jumped in and hammered Northwestern up to as much as a 3-point favorite at a handful of Nevada sports books.

We suggest that will be the only move in the Wildcats’ direction, as the public will now dictate the next price moves. It is very doubtful that any more sharp money comes in on the Northwestern side, considering the Cats’ five straight losses.

Of course, the Wolverines are looking like no bargain at the moment, with some suggesting that HC Brady “Chris Christie” Hoke might be on the hot seat. But it’s still Michigan, and the optics of seeing the Wolverines as a dog against the Wildcats could still strike an odd chord with the public.

The public is not going to move this price beyond three, indeed we expect it to drop closer to pick ‘em by kickoff. Northwestern backers might as well wait for some better value later this week.

Total to watch

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Baylor Bears

Baylor totals continue to generate quite a curiosity factor, but we wonder how the oddsmakers will react to only the second clear Bears Under of the season last week vs. Oklahoma.

Once again, there was appetite on the Over for last week’s game vs. the Sooners, as early totals at 72.5 or thereabout were bet up to as much as 75.5 at several Las Vegas books. Which has been the pattern of Baylor totals this season. No matter how high-priced by the oddsmakers, there is still an Over appetite in the marketplace.

But after falling so far beneath (53) last week vs. the Sooners, we wonder how the public will react to another total likely to be priced in the 70s vs. uptempo Texas Tech, 7-2-1 O/U itself this season.

NCAAF Top 6: Unbeaten contenders and pretenders

Not all unbeaten college football teams are on equal footing.

Thanks to wide variations in strength of schedule, some undefeated teams have had a much harder road to hoe than others. With a handful of weeks remaining in the season and plenty of upset possibilities in the offing, don't be surprised to see certain teams remain perfect - and others fall short.

Here is a look at three undefeated teams that are the real deal - and three that aren't:

Contenders

Alabama Crimson Tide (9-0, 6-0 SEC)

Aside from a hiccup in a narrow victory over then-No. 6 Texas A&M, the defending-champion Tide have made it look easy. The Nick Saban-led juggernaut has rolled past one opponent after another, laying waste to No. 21 Ole Miss on Sept. 28 and most recently cruising to a 38-17 triumph over No. 13 LSU. Easy games against Mississippi State and Chattanooga are followed by what should be Alabama's stiffest test of the year - a date with the seventh-ranked Clemson Tigers.

Florida State Seminoles (9-0, 7-0 ACC)

The only thing keeping the Seminoles from top spot on the list is the number of cupcake games they have on their schedule. But take nothing away from what Florida State has accomplished this season - not only did it crush No. 3 Clemson 51-14 last month, it also has big victories over No. 7 Miami (41-14) and No. 25 Maryland (63-0). Finishing with games against Syracuse, Idaho and Florida, the Seminoles are virtually guaranteed a perfect record heading into bowl season.

Ohio State Buckeyes (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten)

The Buckeyes find themselves a distant third in the BCS standings - and on this list - thanks to a much easier schedule than the two teams ahead of them. Ohio State has made the most of it, boasting the fifth-most prolific offense in the nation and posting impressive wins over No. 23 Wisconsin and No. 16 Northwestern in back-to-back weeks. Despite that, the Buckeyes will need either the Tide or Seminoles to lose in order to secure a national championship game berth.

Pretenders

Fresno State Bulldogs (9-0, 6-0 MWC)

The Bulldogs' unbeaten mark is attributed to pure luck more than any other factor. A Derek Carr touchdown pass with 38 seconds left in the fourth quarter kept Fresno State from losing in the season opener, and a missed San Diego State field goal as time expired in regulation provided second life in a wild overtime win late last month. If they win their final two games, they'll easily wind up the unlikeliest - and least deserving - of the unbeaten Division I teams.

Northern Illinois Huskies (9-0, 5-0 MAC)

A team surrendering 25 points per game doesn't often make it this far without losing a game, but the Huskies have managed to stave off all comers thanks to the eighth-ranked offense in the country. Northern Illinois opened the season with nail-biting victories over Iowa, Idaho and Eastern Illinois, then had to fend off a plucky but terrible Akron squad a month ago. An undefeated season looks promising with games against Ball State, Toledo and Western Michigan on tap.

Baylor Bears (8-0, 5-0 Big 12)

This may seem sacrilegious to Baylor fans, but the Bears have benefited from a far easier schedule than the teams in the top half of this piece. Granted, an emphatic 41-12 thumping of No. 10 Oklahoma is a nice victory to have on the resume, but the fact that wins over Wofford, UL Monroe and Kansas are also there is hardly reason for celebration. Things are about to get a lot tougher for the Bears, who finish against Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas.

The top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide are giving away around 24 points to host Mississippi State this weekend and they could be up by that much at halftime.

Standout quarterback A.J. McCarron faces a Bulldogs defense that has been torched for 144 points in its last three games against nationally ranked teams. That includes a systematic 59-26 dismantling at the hands of visiting Louisiana State back on Oct. 5, a game that saw the Tigers rack up 563 yards of total offense.

Those same Tigers managed just 284 yards in a 38-17 loss to the Tide last week.

Forget game-planning how the Bulldogs will find a way to stop McCarron and Co., and consider how Mississippi State will muster the necessary offense against an Alabama roster allowing fewer than 11 points per game.

NCAAF betting: Big Ten teams closing in on win totals

The college football season is in the homestretch, so what better opportunity to look back at season win totals and check out which teams are on the cusp and still have a legit shot of surpassing those totals?

Here is a look at three bubble teams in the Big Ten that have a chance, but could have season win bettors sweating out the last few weeks.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (7-2)

Nebraska was tabbed with a 9.5 season win total and, to be quite frank, it isn't looking good. But there's a slim chance for bettors who took the Over. Everything rides on the upcoming tilt with Michigan State on Nov. 16. The Spartans lead the Legends Division with an 8-1 record and have gotten stronger since losing to Notre Dame. Should the Huskers escape with a victory, they'll close the season with some winnable matchups at Penn State and versus Iowa.

Wisconsin Badgers (7-2)

Wisconsin has lost twice, but by a combined nine points. The Badgers have three games remaining and need to win two of those to cash in for bettors who took the Over 8.5 wins. It's certainly feasible, with a winnable game at home against Indiana on Nov. 16 adding to bettors' hopes. The season will close a little bit on the tougher side, with a game at Minnesota the following week and a season finale at home to Penn State.

Indiana Hoosiers (4-5)

The high-scoring Hoosiers are all about points - both scoring them, and giving them up. Books had a season win total of 5.5 and a three-game losing was a little unsettling to bettors who took the Over. The Hoosiers snapped that, however, with a win versus Illinois this past weekend. Three games remain on the schedule for the Hoosiers with a winnable game to close the season against Purdue. Before that, however, are away games at Wisconsin and Ohio State, which don't look promising.

As The Noose Tightens

November is, unquestionably, the best time of the season for sports fans. The NFL enters its second-half race. College Football concludes with teams scurrying for bowl bids while the NBA and College Basketball tip off new campaigns. It’s also a great time for handicappers as value aplenty abounds.

Our focus in the world of College Football begins to center around postseason bowl games during turkey month. In particular, we like to zero in on undefeated teams at this stage of the season. That’s because the deeper they get into the season, the more pressure there is on them to remain unbeaten. As a result, the noose certainly gets tighter and tighter each week, especially when these perfect teams take to the road.

This is confirmed by the fact that, since 1980, undefeated College Football teams playing on the regular season road from Game Ten on out are 99-34-1 SU and 57-67-2 ATS. Hence, these teams tend to suffer their first loss of the season nearly one-third of the time. A warning signal has been sounded for Alabama and Ohio State this week.

Pair them up against an under the radar opponent who won 8 or fewer games last season and watch them immediately play down to the level of the opposition as they dip to 6-21 ATS. Bring these same guys in off a win of 20 or more points and they have a difficult time getting their head through the door, going just 3-19 ATS.

Both the Crimson Tide and the Buckeyes look to meet their financial maker this week.

Down The Stretch

Its stretch-run time in college football and with it a list of teams that have been either moneymakers or money breakers at this stage of the season.

From my powerful database, here is how various teams have fared of late from Game Ten out during the regular season heading in to this year. As usual, all results are ATS (Against The Spread) with a minimum five occurrences.

Best Dogs: Arizona 11-1, Boston College 7-1, Memphis 7-1, San Jose State 6-0, Virginia Tech 6-1 and West Virginia 9-1.

Worst Dogs: Air Force 0-8, Michigan 0-5-1, Middle Tennessee State 1-9, Oklahoma State 1-10-1 and Texas Tech 1-5.

Best Favorites: Arkansas 7-0, Arkansas State 5-0, Baylor 5-0, Kansas 6-1, Middle Tennessee State 9-1, Oregon State 5-1, Troy 7-0 and UCLA 5-1.

As we alluded to here last week, our NFL Totals Tipsheet reports OVER players have been taking down the cash in non-conference games this season.

After yet another unassailable 4-0 performance last week, non-conference games (AFC vs. NFC) are now 35-11 OVER this season, including a bookie busting 11-0 the last three weeks.
