Ed Reed's time with the Texans was short-lived.

Rex Ryan would love to be reunited with Ed Reed.

It's on New York Jets general manager John Idzik to make it happen. But that's if he even wants the 35-year-old free-agent safety.

Reed, released Tuesday by Houston, cleared waivers Wednesday and is available to any team. Ryan, who coached Reed for several years in Baltimore, acknowledged that he and Idzik discussed the possibility of adding him.

"If we did, I keep that conversation private and all that kind of stuff," Ryan said. "But part of due diligence, if you've coached a player, I'm sure you would want that input. So, did we have it? I think it's safe to say yes."
Reed missed the Texans' first two games after hip surgery and was relegated to a backup role in recent games, making just 16 tackles. He was unhappy not starting in Houston after signing a three-year, $15 million deal in the offseason after 11 years in Baltimore. Reed also criticized the team for being outplayed and outcoached after the Texans' seventh straight loss last Sunday.

The Jets have the NFL's 26th-ranked pass defense, but Ryan insisted he is pleased with his current group of safeties, including Dawan Landry, Jaiquawn Jarrett and Antonio Allen -- whom the coach said has "a chance to be really good."

But that might not prevent Ryan from wanting to add Reed, who was one of his favorites and is mentioned as one of the league's greatest players at his position.

"It's a logical question," Ryan said. "Look, the way I am, I could say absolutely yes, I would like him on our team. And I'll say that knowing you guys know me."

Ryan quickly mentioned former Jets such as Brandon Moore, Alan Faneca, Trevor Pryce and Damien Woody as guys he'd always like to have playing for him.

"Anybody that I've ever coached, that bled for me," Ryan said, "I want them."

[h=1]Jets add Ed Reed to secondary[/h]
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Safety Ed Reed and the New York Jets reached an agreement Thursday on a contract after the nine-time Pro Bowler cleared waivers Wednesday afternoon following his release by the Houston Texans.

The Jets announced that Reed will practice with the team Thursday. He will wear No. 22 with the Jets, who released linebacker Ricky Sapp to clear a roster spot.

Reed played for Jets coach Rex Ryan when Ryan served as defensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens (2002-08). Ryan once called Reed "the best safety that's ever played."

Reed is familiar with Ryan's system, his defensive coordinator (former Ravens assistant Dennis Thurman) and the team's lead safety, Dawan Landry, another ex-Raven.

On Wednesday, Ryan sounded intrigued by Reed's availability, acknowledging that he and general manager John Idzik discussed the player. People close to the situation questioned whether Idzik would sign off on it. Idzik, hired last January to rebuild the team, is operating from a long-term plan.

But the landscape has changed, as the Jets are a surprising 5-4, currently holding the second wild-card position in the AFC.
Reed will be available for the Jets' game Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. The Jets play the Ravens the following week. If Reed plays against the Ravens, it will be his second game this season against his former team. He made his season debut for Houston in a 30-9 loss at Baltimore in Week 3.

Reed is by far the splashiest veteran acquisition of the Idzik regime. But the cinch Hall of Famer comes with questions.

Reed, who left the Ravens to sign a three-year, $15 million contract with the Texans, underwent hip surgery last offseason and missed the first two games. He played in only 49 percent of the team's defensive snaps, recently losing his starting job. He had no interceptions, no pass break-ups and only 16 tackles.

In last week's loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Reed played only 12 snaps and said afterward the Texans had been "outplayed and outcoached." That seemingly sealed his fate.

Reed, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2004, isn't what he used to be. But the Jets' pass defense, yielding 251 yards per game (ranked 24th), needs help. They have only five interceptions, including just two by the safeties.

Reed probably will start alongside Landry, although it's possible he could be the No. 3 safety. Ryan is high on second-year safety Antonio Allen and may not want to remove him from the lineup. But the Jets use three safeties in certain packages, meaning all three could be on the field.

Reed is one of the most accomplished defensive players in recent history. He has 61 interceptions for 1,541 return yards [a league record] and seven touchdowns. He's a five-time All-Pro, last making it in 2010.
