Timberwolves at Wizards: What bettors need to know

Minnesota Timberwolves at Washington Wizards (+3.5, 204)

The Minnesota Timberwolves look to even their road record and pick up their second consecutive victory when they travel to take on the struggling Washington Wizards on Tuesday. The Timberwolves routed Boston 106-88 on Saturday for their fifth win in six home games, but they're just 2-3 on the road. That could change against the Wizards, who dropped their fourth straight game Saturday, falling 103-96 in overtime against Cleveland after squandering a 15-point lead.

The Timberwolves finally seem to have the right personnel to be successful in third-year coach Rick Adelman's system and they have two point guards - Ricky Rubio and J.J. Barea - who are capable of running the show. "No question, I like it," Barea said of sharing the point duties with Rubio. "We do a good job moving the ball and attacking the paint." The teams split two meetings a year ago with the host winning each.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN North Plus (Minnesota), CSN Washington

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (7-4): Minnesota has put together a strong offensive team with the duo of Kevin Love (26.8 points, 13.6 rebounds) and Nikola Pekovic (13.9 points, 9 rebounds) controlling the post and Kevin Martin (24.4 points) lighting it up from outside. Rubio (8 points, 9.6 assists) continues to improve at both ends and averages 3.1 steals to anchor a solid defensive squad. The Timberwolves also take advantage of their trips to the foul line, ranking third in the NBA at 81.7 percent with three starters above 86 percent.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (2-7): Washington has six players averaging double-digit scoring but has been one of the worst defensive teams in the league, allowing opponents to shoot 48.3 percent and score 104.6 points per game. The Wizards haven't yet seen first-round pick Otto Porter, who has missed the first nine games with a hip flexor, and another young star is struggling as point guard John Wall is shooting 29 percent over the past five games. Wall still averages 16.1 points and 9.1 assists and forms a promising young backcourt with leading scorer Bradley Beal (20.2 points).

TRENDS:

* Home team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Timberwolves are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games.
* Wizards are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 vs. NBA Northwest.
* Over is 4-0 in Wizards last four games playing on two days rest.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Washington C Marcin Gortat has five double-doubles in his last seven games.

2. Rubio has recorded a steal in 32 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NBA.

3. Wizards SF Trevor Ariza (hamstring) missed Saturday's game and is not expected to play versus Minnesota.

World Cup qualifiers continue Tuesday, France big fave

The second leg of Europe's World Cup qualifying matches are set to go Tuesday. France and Croatia are, surprisingly, on the verge of looking for refunds on the airfare to Brazil.

Romania v Greece (+115, +240, +280)

Greece won the first leg at home by a score of 3-1. The Greeks have won seven-straight matches and six-straight in World Cup Qualifying.

Croatia v Iceland (-275, +375, +1100)

The first leg was a 0-0 draw in Reykjavík. The Croats have lost back-to-back qualifiers on home soil (2-1 v Belgium, 1-0 v Scotland). Iceland is unbeaten in five-straight qualifying matches, including two draws on foreign soil.

Sweden v Portugal (+170, +240, +175)

Portugal won the first leg 1-0 in Lisbon. The Portuguese are unbeaten in eight-straight qualifying matches (5 wins, 3 draws)

France v Ukraine (-225, +350, +800)

Ukraine won the first leg 2-0 in Kiev. Ukraine has won seven of its last eight qualifying matches.

Buffalo at Miami (Ohio): What bettors need to know

Buffalo Bulls at Miami (Ohio) RedHawks (+24.5, 48)

The Buffalo Bills will likely be playing for top spot in the Mid-American Conference's East Division next week when it tangles with Bowling Green. But first, the Bulls will need a strong showing against Miami (Ohio) as they visit the winless RedHawks on Tuesday night. Buffalo is coming off a wild 51-41 defeat at the hands of the Toledo Rockets last week, while Miami (Ohio) fell to 0-6 in the conference - and 0-10 overall - with a 24-6 loss at the hands of Kent State.

While Buffalo is a heavy favorite against a team that manages just over 220 yards of total offense per game, the Bulls are wise not to look past this game after falling behind 38-0 against Toledo, then watching their stunning second-half rally fall just short. Quarterback Joe Licata was one of the lone bright spots in that one with 497 passing yards and four touchdowns. The RedHawks are playing out the string, having scored just one touchdown in their last three games.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPNU
LINE: Buffalo enters as a 24.5-point favorite, with the total set at 48.
WEATHER: Temperatures will approach the freezing mark with clear skies.

ABOUT BUFFALO (7-3, 5-1 MAC): Licata has shown plenty of promise as a sophomore, passing for 2,235 yards and 20 touchdowns. Last game marked a career-best in yardage for the native of Williamsville, New York, and he has thrown just one interception in his previous six games. Senior running back Branden Oliver ground out 102 yards against the Rockets, extending his streak of triple-digit rushing games to six while scoring for the the eighth time in four games.

ABOUT MIAMI (OHIO) (0-10, 0-6): There aren't many positives to glean from the RedHawks' performance on either side of the ball, but things have looked particularly dire on offense. Miami (Ohio) is averaging fewer than 10 points per game, with senior quarterback Austin Boucher throwing for just 1,036 yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions. The team is averaging only 2.6 yards per carry on the season, with a paltry three touchdowns on the ground.

TRENDS

* Bulls are 5-0 ATS against teams with losing records.
* RedHawks are 6-15-1 ATS in their previous 22 games.
* Under is 9-3 in Buffalo's last 12 conference games.
* Over is 5-0 in the last five meetings at Miami (Ohio).

NCAAF Top 6: Unbeaten contenders and pretenders

Not all unbeaten college football teams are on equal footing.

Thanks to wide variations in strength of schedule, some undefeated teams have had a much harder road to hoe than others. With a handful of weeks remaining in the season and plenty of upset possibilities in the offing, don't be surprised to see certain teams remain perfect - and others fall short.

Here is a look at three undefeated teams that are the real deal - and three that aren't:

Contenders

Alabama Crimson Tide (10-0, 7-0 SEC)

Aside from a hiccup in a narrow victory over then-No. 6 Texas A&M, the defending-champion Tide have made it look easy. The Nick Saban-led juggernaut has rolled past one opponent after another, laying waste to LSU on Nov. 9 and most recently posting a 20-7 triumph over Mississippi State. An easy game against Chattanooga is followed by what should be Alabama's stiffest test of the year - a date with the sixth-ranked AuburnTigers.

Florida State Seminoles (10-0, 8-0 ACC)

The only thing keeping the Seminoles from top spot on the list is the number of cupcake games they have on their schedule. But take nothing away from what Florida State has accomplished this season - not only did it crush No. 3 Clemson 51-14 last month, it also has big victories over No. 7 Miami (41-14) and No. 25 Maryland (63-0). Finishing with games against Idaho and Florida, the Seminoles are virtually guaranteed a perfect record heading into bowl season.

Ohio State Buckeyes (10-0, 6-0 Big Ten)

The Buckeyes find themselves a distant third in the BCS standings - and on this list - thanks to a much easier schedule than the two teams ahead of them. Ohio State has made the most of it, boasting the fifth-most prolific offense in the nation and posting impressive wins over No. 23 Wisconsin and No. 16 Northwestern in back-to-back weeks. Despite that, the Buckeyes will need either the Tide or Seminoles to lose in order to secure a national championship game berth.

Pretenders

Fresno State Bulldogs (9-0, 6-0 MWC)

The Bulldogs' unbeaten mark is attributed to pure luck more than any other factor. A Derek Carr touchdown pass with 38 seconds left in the fourth quarter kept Fresno State from losing in the season opener, and a missed San Diego State field goal as time expired in regulation provided second life in a wild overtime win late last month. If they win their final two games, they'll easily wind up the unlikeliest - and least deserving - of the unbeaten Division I teams.

Northern Illinois Huskies (10-0, 6-0 MAC)

A team surrendering 25.2 points per game doesn't often make it this far without losing a game, but the Huskies have managed to stave off all comers thanks to the sixth-ranked offense in the country. Northern Illinois opened the season with nail-biting victories over Iowa, Idaho and Eastern Illinois, then had to fend off a plucky but terrible Akron squad a month ago. An undefeated season looks promising with games against Toledo and Western Michigan on tap.

Baylor Bears (8-0, 5-0 Big 12)

This may seem sacrilegious to Baylor fans, but the Bears have benefited from a far easier schedule than the teams in the top half of this piece. Granted, an emphatic 41-12 thumping of No. 10 Oklahoma is a nice victory to have on the resume, but the fact that wins over Wofford, UL Monroe and Kansas are also there is hardly reason for celebration. Things are about to get a lot tougher for the Bears, who finish against Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas.

Nice match-up between sides not shy about getting up and down the floor and puttin’

WINNING POINTS

PRO BASKETBALL

Minnesota over *Washington by 4
Washington's weak frontcourt figures to have problems with Kevin Love, who is establishing himself as one of the five best players in the league averaging 27.2 points, 14.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists a game through the second weekend of this month.
MINNESOTA 106-102.

**PREFERRED
*Detroit over New York by 11
The Pistons should dominate the backboards with Andre Drummond and Greg
Monroe. The Knicks are vulnerable inside minus Tyson Chandler. Andrea Bargnani
could be the worst rebounding 7-footer in the NBA and Amare Stoudemire is just a
shell of the player he once was.
DETROIT 102-91.

*Miami over Atlanta by 8
The Heat defeated the Hawks both times in Miami last season winning by a combined
26 points. It's become dangerous, however, to lay the wood with the Heat when their
history is to peak during the second half of the season.
MIAMI 100-92.

*Houston over Boston by 10
The Celtics were 4-1 ATS as underdogs this season through Nov. 10. The scrappy
Celtics could be in line for a backdoor cover if Dwight Howard continues to miss
more that half of his free throws.
HOUSTON 106-96.

*Sacramento over Phoenix by 2
The Suns were 3-0 ATS on the road through Nov. 12 and their reserves were averaging a healthy 36.7 points per game.
SACRAMENTO 100-98.

Kent State at Ohio: What bettors need to know

Kent State Golden Flashes at Ohio Bobcats (-5.5, 49)

Having failed spectacularly in a spoiler role, the Ohio Bobcats will have to settle for a shot at third place in the Mid-American Conference's East Division as they entertain the Kent State Golden Flashes on Tuesday night. The Bobcats tangled with division co-leaders Buffalo and Bowling Green in consecutive weeks, and were promptly routed by a combined score of 79-3. Kent State halted a five-game losing skid last time out with a 24-6 triumph over Miami (Ohio).

Tuesday's game pits new blood against old guard as Ohio senior quarterback Tyler Tettleton duels Kent State freshman signal-caller Colin Reardon. Tettleton was limited to 93 passing yards and an interception in last week's 49-0 drubbing at the hands of the Falcons, while threw for 147 yards and ran for 30 and a score in the victory over the RedHawks. Kent State can finish no higher than fifth in the division, while the Bobcats will secure third place with a victory.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2
ODDS: Ohio is listed as a 5.5-point favorite, with the total set at 49.
WEATHER: Temperatures will approach the freezing mark under clear skies.

ABOUT KENT STATE (3-8, 2-5 MAC): Reardon will conclude what has been an up-and-down season Tuesday, having thrown for 1,744 yards with 11 TDs and nine interceptions - five of which came in losses to Buffalo and Akron that preceded the win over Miami (Ohio). He has thrown just one touchdown pass in the last three games. Trayion Durham posted his second 100-yard rushing game of the season last time out, while scoring for the third consecutive game.

ABOUT OHIO (6-4, 3-3): Tettleton's final collegiate season has been trending in the wrong direction for several weeks now. He threw for 681 combined yards and seven scores in wins over Eastern Michigan and Miami (Ohio), but followed that up with 219 combined yards and zero scores in the losses to the Bulls and Falcons. Beau Blankenship leads the team with 644 rushing yards, but Ryan Boykin has more touchdowns on the ground (six).

TRENDS

* Golden Flashes are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games following a SU win.
* Bobcats are 2-8 ATS in their previous 10 home games vs. teams with losing road records.
* Under is 5-1 in Kent State's last six conference games.
* Road team is 10-3 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
