its time to get serious, its cold outside and I want to be in better shape by the time it starts warming up again. im looking to lose around 40-50 lbs. I know the best way to go about this is diet and exercise which will begin on Friday after Thanksgiving. im going to go the atkins route and focus on cutting out carbs, sugars, and junk food.

im looking for some helpful ideas on dishes to make or items to avoid. one of my main questions is i know natural sugars like banannas and what not are ok, how about juices such as apple and orange juice as part of a healthy diet? how about those v-8 type drinks that give you fruit and vegetable servings. obviously im going to go away from things like burgers, pizza, most sandwiches, cookies, cake etc. just looking for some helpful do's and don'ts. I will be focusing alot of my food around chicken, as its one of my favorite items to eat.

Tuna
Turkey
Fish
Egg Whites
Almonds
Oatmeal

Screw the juices. Water and lots of it.

What works for me is not eating after 7-8 p.m. If you've never cut carbs before, do it in moderation. Your body will crave for those sugars and it will be hard as you get tired and fatigued real fast.

Yeah, yogurt is good. I love it.

Almonds as a snack yes. I eat them with a protein bar for breakfast but I eat them unsalted which many people don't enjoy. I'd also look at bodybuilder.com's website. There's a ton of good information in there about diets, exercise etc. Good site not just for serious weightlifters.

Oh yeah, if you want to lose lbs, no more drinking beer for awhile. Or one every once in awhile. Sorry man.

It's all about portion size and eating 6x a day, or grazing. The fruit juice, or sugar is fine in the morning for that initial get up, if you have to have it. General rule of thumb is you have to cut 3500kcal per week to lose a pound, or 500 a day. Throw in some cardio and weight training, and you should nail 8-10 lbs your first week and 1-2 thereafter. And it's funny, but some of the foods you listed aren't as bad as you think when it comes to getting calories in proportion to their source;fats, carbs, proteins. And afterall, you got to have a cheat day. Good luck and I know you will achieve your goal.

Great website.

-Not necessarily on the beer. It's the moderation factor. Or, if you want to blow your cheat day on a 12 pack, then so be it. Pound out the water the next day and get back to work.

Apple Juice FULL of Sugar !! If you would like a little Orange Juice once in a while .. go buy the Trop 50 ( 1/2 the sugar )

If you try to cut out EVERYTHING... it will be tough. But I will give you some ideas for Treats that you can have Once every other week...

Not 100% sure since you said you will be trying the Atkins Diet... which worked for me.. back in the day.
But heard it has changed.

Once Every Other WEEK.... Whole Wheat Pizza ... made with LOW FAT Cheese ( if allowed on Atkins )

Buy some Cold Cuts... Turkey, Boiled Ham, Alpine Lace Swiss ... Roll them up... dip into Mustard... it's a Good Lunch Snack.

again, don't know much about Atkins anymore since they changed.
I do remember No Breads... No Fruit... Just Protein ... Tons of it

This really helps too, and since you like chicken...

I like to cook at least 3 days worth at a time of Boneless Skinless Breast. Make 2 different flavors for Lunch and Dinner.
I also like to prepare my snacks by portion size in the little snack baggies as well. Take the 2 minutes to lay out the entire week. 5/1oz bags almonds 5/1oz bags jerky 5/1 oz back dried fruit etc.

This helps to stay on track of eating right to me and saves me a few pennies of being able to buy in bulk instead of paying for the packaging.

Love the Trop 50 No Pulp myself. Also like to take the Apple Juice if I drink it and cut it 1/4 apple to 3/4 water. Works just fine to me. Kinda like lemon in water.

Cold Cuts is a great idea. You can eat all the mustard you want. If you like hot sauce, you're good there too. Have to cut the mayo.

Look in to the Paleo diet. It's not just for losing weight, I have couple of training buddies that use it also. It's basically you can eat natural foods that cavemen had access to. Anything man made isn't allowed. Look it up, you follow that for couple months you will lose weight and feel incredibly healthy.

Yep.. that's why I said Mustard... I even made a Mustard Glaze for Chicken

as far as Mayo ... I will use the Hellman's Light. Not the Low Fat

remember if it says "Low Fat" they are probably using More Sugar

ever read the label on Mayo ?? where it says 0g of Sugar ?? take a look at the ingredients ... it's pretty funny
Just because it's less than a gram, they can list 0g
Go to the Low Fat Mayo.. and it reads Less than a gram... meaning More than the others

anyway.. Matt is right... should stay away... I know some need it for can Tuna... so I would go with the Light

Dude just starting walking and after that running. You will drop a ton of weight. 6 meals a day. Try protein shakes. No sugar kind. If you put anything on your food check it first. Tuna out of the can with hot sauce only. Water. No drinking. Drugs. Smoking.
