OT: Anyone Know Anything About 'AppleCare'?

Hey fellow Rx'ers-

I have an iPhone 5 which was purchased in May of this year to replace my old iPhone 5 which was dropped repeatedly, screen broken, and finally went tits up. So, this time, when I shelled out $495 or whatever it was for an iPhone 5 without an upgrade, I sprung for the extra $100 option of 'AppleCare' which I was told would prevent me from being put over a barrel if (more like, when) I broke this new iPhone.

Well, as fate would have it, I'm in the car with the phone in my lap on Wednesday - I parked and got out without realizing that I hadn't secured my phone and BOOM it drops face down (as ALWAYS) on the pavement. Of course, my screen is shattered and looks like hell... and now I want to redeem my AppleCare 'insurance policy' - So my question is this:

a) Do I just go into the Apple store and tell them I have applecare and they'll handle the rest?
b) How much is this shit going to cost me?
c) Do I get a new phone, or do they just replace the screen on my old one?

Anyone who has any experience with this - your feedback would be much appreciated.

I assume they will give you a refurbished phone. Mine crapped out at a Rx Bash (under warranty) and that's what I got.

Go to an apple stores not a cell store or a best buy-type store.

The AppleCare+ plan for iPhones and iPads costs $99. AppleCare+ comes with a bonus: It also covers accidental damage. If you break your device, or even drop it in the pool, Apple will repair or replace the your iPhone for a set fee of $79 (or your iPad for $49)

You can go into the store or call 1 -800-694-7466 for more info.

Note: with Apple, there likely will be a replacement device, not a "new screen" as it is just easier for them given their manufacturing process.

Thanks man... Man, that pisses me off to no end... I mean, I get it... it's business and I'd probably do the same thing. But I've already paid $99 on the front end and now I'm getting rung up for another $80 to actually use it.

Oh well... I'll pay it and be glad to get the phone fixed.

Beats the alternative of getting my iPhone 4 stolen and having to buy a replacement that day for $600.

Might want to consider getting a case or something when you get fixed up this time...

You can call and make an appointment at your local Apple Store.
Then just show up for your appointment.
If the problem with Mac device is your fault you will be charged a fee for a "new" replacement.
If the problem with the Mac device is NOT your fault they will replace the device with a "new" one at no cost to you.

I had minor problems with both my iphone and ipad a while back. Made an appointment with the Apple Store locally and was in and out in less than 20 mins with new devices at no cost to me. Besides for the original cost of AppleCare.

Good luck. Apple's customer service is usually pretty good to deal with.

to fix a screen will cost them at least $1, then they sell the phone to the next guy for $499
that is why apple is the highest value company in the world

right off i'm assuming you went back to your carrier the first time when you paid the $495? dont do that. just go directly to an apple store and they will sell you a new one for $229 i think it is. Carriers mark those things way up. Secondly, yes the applecare plus protects you from anything, even if its your fault for a period of 2 years for a $79 fee. and up to two instances. They will basically just give you a new phone. You can fix just the screen but on the iphone 5's the digitizer and LCD screen are fused together i belive so just buying that part would cost you way more then the $79. Just make an apppointment at the nearest apple store and they can change it out in under 30 minutes. If you don't have an apple store by you you can call apple and they can ship you one
