I always hear about people getting great deals, but everytime I look, I feel like I'm paying too much

did you try carrentals.com

free cancellation so you can still shop around and try bidding on priceline for example each day if you really cared about saving a few bucks (and had the time), but carrentals.com is a good place to start

i just put in a week in march to see what came up and the rates were from $225 or so for 3/7 - 3/14

Economics 101 folks....this is what happens when the DOJ allows industries to consolidate to the point where you have an oligopoly. You now only have 3 players in the US rental car market: Hertz, Avis and Enterprise. With all of the mergers, competition has been wiped out. Enterprise bought National/Alamo, Avis bought budget, and Hertz bought Dollar/Thrifty. Aside from a few small local mom and pops, the US rental car industry is now controlled by a few very large companies. The rates that you are bitching about are here to stay, get used to it. Travelers, get ready to bend over and take it in the ass, because the same thing is going on in the airline industry with the consolidation that is taking place in that industry. If you haven't noticed, airfares have been creeping up, and will not be going down anytime soon. Those baggage fees to help cover fuel costs are here to stay too.

Looking around online I found a few companies at about $120/week for basic cars. Plus tax/fees might be $140-$150. Are you paying like $20 a day for their insurance? Usually you don't need that...

I'm Renting a car for a week in Vegas around the time the Super Bowl is taking place thru ALAMO and it's less than $130 including taxes and an extra driver for a full size vehicle. I used a Costco code.
