Refs have too much control and influence. NFL is a great example but college hoops is out of control also. NFL has been going downhill for a while now. The hit the niners put on Drew Brees called a personal foul in NO is a prime example.

The product has definitely declined over the last few years, Im not sure how people can say its better, sure there s been some great games here and there. The league wanted increased scoring and they got it, they want to protect the quarterback and defenseless hit, they are trying hard to do that but the end result is a subpar product that most will pay for no matter the rules, standards and regulations. Then there are moral and ethics issues if you want to dive in further.

It's getting enraging. I mean it's as if the refs are on a power trip or have their own agenda. They are literally changing the games with their flags. I believe the rules MUST be changed where challenges are allowed and instant replay comes into action when it comes to pass interference etc. I mean a lot of these flags are game changing penalties. Coaches should be allowed to throw the red flag and challenge and have them review it.

My issue is the flags that come 5 seconds after the play happens. It's almost like they don't want to call anything until the sideline starts yelling at them.

PI is getting ridiculous. If not for betting I wouldn't watch. NBA was ruined for me years ago with ticky tac whistles. At least soccer and hockey have some flow to the game.

My biggest issue with PI calls is on under-thrown balls. It a defender is running with the WR and the ball is under-thrown there should not be a flag because the WR slowed down. I also wouldnt mind seeing the pros adapt the college rules of making PI a 15 yd penalty, instead of spot foul

NFL officiating and rule changes have now become so bad, we have to seriously consider the fact that it could be on par with NBA officiating..

The refs have always sucked but the league and their rule changes has given the refs a better opportunity to "shine". In a negative way that is.

That bullshit call is going to end up costing the 49ers the #1 seed in the NFC unless the Seahawks lose this week.

keep hearing the bitching on the hoops fouls but the general avg # of fouls called per game this year is up 2, hardly a difference maker. there are some pretty rough games (that gtown/oregon one was brutal and the stanford one i watched...think it was vs BYU) but overall it's up ONE foul per half.

if anyone watched sac/no game last night (70 FT attempts) you'll see it's just one game here or there that is brutally officiated but i don't see any overwhelming issue.

pass interferences have been bitched about ever since mel blount got the rules in place and it's not going to change. hell we had a ncaa title decided on an egregious pass interference call ... though not sure i've seen a meaningful one as bad as the pats call vs the browns that allowed them to comeback and win. brutal

It's bad in the NHL too. It's all leagues. A large part of it is the fact that they just want more scoring even if they have to cheat to make it happen.

If you follow and watch the games enough you will know that there have been plenty of meaningful ones.

Rolltide, I watch a lot of college hoops. It isn't just the odd game here or there and the officiating wasn't just a problem this year. The major problem is they have very incompetent and old refs and some of them I truly believe are bent. They need to bring in new refs that are young and ready. The old refs are grumpy, they do shady things, thy hold grudges, and they back each other up. And it is always the same group of old officials calling all the major games. COllege hoops refs, and all the major big name ones, is a cesspit of shady officiating. There is no excuse for them to be incompetent as they are and still have jobs. Unfortunately nobody says anything bad about them because it will hurt their team or their future team. They always say we have the best refs in the biz tonight blah blah. They are selectice when they enforce the new rules. There is no consistency which makes it impossible to play and impossible to cap.

The NFL has the same problem. Too many old refs that are grumpy and incompetent. Get guys like Gene Steretore who does hoops also and clean up the game. Instead they have the same old idiots every game that try and manage the game instead of let players play.

The main problem is when you install new rules, in theory it is a great idea. But when you tell officials you need to call more fouls, then they are going to seek them out which RUINS THE GAME. It is really hard to implement with these refs. They need to call the fouls that are there, not meet a quota. It is impossible to watch.
