Why isn't Clay Matthews playing vs SF??

Ok, I understand he has a broken thumb. So what, wrap it up and get out there.

Maybe some football players here or ex-player can explain why a broken thumb would render you out of the game.
Isn't his main job is to tackle players or chase down the qb and disrupt the qb? Can't he do that with a broken thumb?? :think2:

he doesnt like playing in the cold. if it gets above 40 he will play

Clay fractured the thumb in a cast, remember it still can only hold the thumb in place but when he flexes it extremely hard he can re injure it. He uses his grip to throw offensive linemen one way or another, his hands are some of the best in the nfl, I think if the packers made the Super Bowl he'd still sit out

Not everybody is Brett Favre lol. Clay I am sure would play if he could....he doesn't want to hurt his team

Yeah, I'm sure if he could he would play.
I'm just envisioning his hand being completely wrapped/in a cast and just using it has a club and go after Kapernick accordingly with it. You know, whack him a few times just to let him know he's there.

Mod mentioned Favre, boy no injury would keep that guy off the field, he was one of a kind.

I thought he had an injured thumb then reinjured it recently while playing witg a bad thumb. I could be wrong but if they think he will be ineffective then they won't trot him out the re.

i'm sure these guys will play if they believe it was in the best interest of them and the team.

Green Bay will have a tough road to the superbowl but they have a river boat gambler's chance.

You remember the season he had with a broken right thumb? How do you even grip a football with a broken thumb? He had the highest completion % of his career that yr

Or how about that MNF at Oakland day after his dad died. My god, every bomb he threw was caught by the GB receivers. It was a magical night for him.

You could argue both sides that the players today aren't anything like his predecessors. Some of them played for $50.00 a game with no contracts. They played on Sunday and went to their regular job on Monday.
It is a different story today. It is more likely that $$ are involved. You will never know how their contracts are written regarding incentives, injuries, or playing time et.cetera.

Yup. Also seems that guys with locked up long term deals are less likely to play hurt than guys in a contract year. Dunno his particular situation.

it's the doctor's not clearing him to play. he has no say. if they clear him, it's his choice and most players would choose to play. obviously the doctor's feel he is not medically ready to play. that's why they get paid. to think he has any choice in the matter is rather ignorant.

Clay Matthews, who underwent right thumb surgery prior to Week 17, after aggravating his right thumb again on a sack in the second quarter of the 38-31 loss to the Steelers, has been ruled out for the Packers' playoff opener. Said coach Mike McCarthy, "Right now he's out for this week, and that's really what we're focused on ... You're always cautious with players after surgery. That's why he didn't travel with the team (to Chicago for the regular-season finale)." Matthews finished the regular season leading the team with 7.5 sacks.

He isn't related to Jack Youngblood thats for sure. Jack Youngblood played in the 1980 probowl with a broken leg.

Sometimes the doctors get paid by the ones making the decisions for them as well.
